Feature Friday :: Vanity Rich 3 Year Anniversary#Vanity3 || The Jefferson Spa

VanityRich.com will be turning three in two weeks, and to celebrate and especially thank all of my followers, I’ll be giving away goodies throughout the day on Saturday, April 21st.  So make sure you stay tuned on facebook and twitter for additional info.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity of receiving an amazing massage from Lilly at The Jefferson Spa. I selected the “Couture Massage” in which I had the option of selecting the duration, pressure, strokes/techniques, areas of focus and oils.  I chose a 60 minute, medium pressure, Swedish and deep tissue that focused on my neck, hips and glutes.  Let me tell you, it felt heavenly! I was really ready to doze off, that’s how great it felt.  After my massage, I was treated to a pleasant snack of Greek yogurt and berries.

The atmosphere, the aura  and not to mention, my masseuse, Lilly and the rest of the staff at The Jefferson were superb.

If you’re in the DC area, and ever looking for a place to relax and rejuvenate, you should definitely schedule yourself a treatment at The Jefferson Spa.  Visit them online at http://www.jeffersondc.com/spa/

Feature Friday :: güd from Burt’s Bees Product Review

Last week I received a nice güdde package of products from güd by Burt’s Bees.  I’ve used Burt’s Bees products before, but this  was my first time using güd, so I was excited to try everything out.  Like Burt Bee’s, all güd products are made with natural ingredients - no petrochemicals, parabens or pthalates and never tested on animals. So that was definitely a plus!

In my I received:

Floral Cherrynova Natural Body Wash ($7 10 fl. oz.)

The scent of soft cherry blossoms and creamy almond milk will gently revive you while chamomile conditions your skin. So your shower is a spa, not a rude awakening.

Orange Petalooza Natural Body Mist ($6)

Mist a little into the air. Walk into the mist. Now go hug it out with someone so they can smell the exhilarating high notes of hyacinth and blood orange, you plucky girl, you.

Vanilla Flame Natural Body Lotion ($7)

Let the exotic scent of vanilla and rice milk leave your skin smelling so wonderful, it inspires love letters. And poems. And sonnets. And the occasional misspelled text message.

First, I tried the body wash.  I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the Floral Cherrynova scent.  It almost reminded me of my favorite scent from Bath and Body Works, Cherry Blossom.  It seemed like the scent lingered on me all day.  Orange Petalooza is very loud.  I’m not a fan of citrus scents, so the Orange Petalooza body mist, didn’t do it for me.  Maybe I’ll try the mist in Floral Cherrynova next time.  I’ve always enjoy the scent of vanilla, so while the Vanilla Flame Body Lotion did smell good, it wasn’t the  most hydrating.  Needless to say, it won’t replace my regular lotion.

While I wasn’t too crazy about the Orange Petalooza scent and the body lotion, I did find a scent I liked, and really, their prices are very reasonable, compared to Bath and Body Works.  Not to mention, the products are made from naturally güd stuff.  I’m still anxious to try their body butter and handcream in Floral Cherrynova of course!

5 Ways to Upgrade Your Morning Routine

“To simply wake up every morning a better person than when I went to bed.” – Sidney Poitier

I’m not a morning person and it’s kind of sad, because I remember the days when I used to wake up at 5am with ease. Now, it’s a struggle to make it out of bed by 7am.  I chalk it up to old age, I guess lol, but I know ultimately, the way I start my mornings, usually determines what kind of day I’ll have.  So when I’m dragging at the beginning of the day, I usually have no time for breakfast, morning chitchats, etc. I’m always late, which consequently gives me less time to get things accomplished. So I’ve decided to alter my morning routine.

If your morning routine is also feeling like a “mourning” routine here are a few tips to help you begin your day on a more positive note.

1.  You Snooze You Lose
I have a terrible habit of setting my alarm to 5:30am, but not actually getting up until an hour later.  The more I snooze, the more I lose time from important things like eating breakfast, watching the news and actually being on time.  I have recently decided to break this bad habit, by getting up when my alarm goes off the first time.  I know this maybe difficult initially, but after sometime you’ll get used to it and if this is still not working, try putting your alarm away from you bed, so you actually have to get out of bed to turn it off.

2.  Give Thanks
When I think of this, I always think about my 8 month old nephew who passed away in his sleep last year and that more than ever inspires me to give thanks each morning. You don’t have to be religious or deeply spiritual.  Just take a few minutes out of your morning, before you check your e-mails, before you turn on the TV, to meditate, pray or just to reflect on what you’re grateful of.  This will definitely have a positive impact on the rest of your day.

3.  Work it Out
Remember, your body hasn’t been active in the 8,7,6 or how many hours you have slept, so a great way to give your mind and body a boost is running or jogging or even something as simple as stretching in the morning.

4.  Breakfast
They always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and studies have shown that people who eat breakfast, not only perform better throughout the day, but are more able to maintain a healthy weight.

5. Get Beautiful
Whether it’s taking the time to put on your makeup, styling your hair or painting your nails, do something that makes you feel beautiful.  By doing this, it will not only make you look fabulous, but feel it as well!

Let us know about your morning routine.  Is what you’re doing in the morning working for you? How can you improve it?

New Sunscreen Regulations Set to Block the Confusion

I’m sure many of you have heard the news concerning the FDA’s new sunscreen rules.  Between UVA, UBA, sunscreen and sunblock, I always get a little confused. So if you’re like me, than you’re probably puzzled about what these new rules are and what exactly do they mean. To help clarify the new regulations, here’s the run down:

  • All products will be tested for their effectiveness against the more dangerous sun rays linked to skin cancer.
  • Manufacturers will also have to upgrade their labels to clearly distinguish what their products do.  Sunscreens that don’t offer proper protection will have to reveal to the public that they only help prevent sunburn, not skin cancer.
  • Sunscreens will no longer be able to carry an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) value higher than 50, the FDA says, because there isn’t sufficient evidence to show that an SPF higher than 50 provides greater protection.
  • Products will no longer be allowed to be labeled as sun blocks because there is no evidence that they block all the radiation in sunlight.
  • Products also may no longer be labeled “waterproof” or “sweat proof.” Instead, they can only be called “water resistant,” and labels must state clearly how long such protection lasts — either 40 minutes or 80 minutes.
  • All sunscreens will carry their SPF rating. On products without the broad-spectrum claim, SPF will rate only UVB protection. On broad-spectrum sunscreens (protects against UVA and UVB rays), higher SPF numbers mean more protection against UVB (Ultraviolet B rays) as well as more protection against UVA (Ultraviolet A rays).
  • Sunscreens will now have a fact box listing warnings and other important information in an easy-to-find location
  • These rules will take effect in  summer 2012

Remember  everyone needs sunscreen.  More than 3.5 million people develop skin cancer each year.  Studies have found a link between sunburns and enhanced risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Protect yourself with an SPF of 30 or higher, because UV Rays ain’t nothing to play with!

Half Moon Manis :: Spring 2011 Nail Trend

Last year, minx nails were the biggest craze all over Hollywood and in nail salons.  Celebrities like Rihanna and Lady Gaga who rocked the decorative adhesive film, helped turn the once exclusive trend into an accessible luxury.   Fast forward to 2011 and the newest nail trend fresh off of New York’s Fashion Week is the Half Moon Manicure.

Think of the French manicure with a little twist – reversed with a half moon shape at the base of your fingertips. This vintage manicure style popular in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s has resurfaced on the runways at the Ruffian show and has been seen on the nails of celebs such as Dita Von Teese and Diana Ramirez.

You can try this look at home by using binder reinforcements as your guide.  Choose your moon color and paint your nails 1/3 to the center and allow them to dry.  Then place a binder reinforcement to the area where you’ll be applying the second color and polish over the edge of reinforcement up to the end of the nail.  Allow your nails to dry before you remove the reinforcements.  Finally, finish it up with a top coat.

Chic Prints :: Minx Nails at Sephora

Everybody who’s anybody has heard of Minx nails, well that is of course if you haven’t been living under a rock for the past year or so.  The decorative adhesive film made famous by celebrities like Beyonce, Rihanna and Lady Gaga has become the latest craze in nail trends. Minx nails initially was only available at salons that performed the services has now become more accessible since its debut at Sephora last week.

Chic Prints is the spin off of Minx nails from Sephora and nail giant, O.P.I. Chic Prints come in eight designs: anchor, stars, checkers, tiger, fishnet, chrome lace, black & gold geometric, or skulls and each pack contains 16 nail patches that can be applied to fingers or toes.

Application is pretty easy; you simply warm the sheets in your hands, apply the adhesive to your fingers and/or toes, trim and file to fit your nails, soon you’ll have a fresh and funky manicure in minutes and at $15 you can’t beat the price compared to the $40+ that the salons charge for the Minx service.

The Scary Tale of the Hairy Legs

So I totally missed the Golden Globes this past weekend…sorry, the playoffs were on and as the woman of a football fanatic, that’s not even up for debate. Besides, I knew there would be plenty of photos, blogs and articles and tweets to keep me up to date.

Anyway, as I was checking on my twitter updates, I received the news about actress and comedian, Mo’nique’s big win as supporting actress for her role in the movie Precious. Everyone kept talking about how elegant and gorgeous she looked, but all I kept thinking was “I hope she shaved her legs”. For those of you who don’t know, Mo’nique doesn’t believe in shaving…odd, I know!

And of course I was deeply disappointed when I saw pics and headlines the next day. I guess to each, its own, but at such a prestigious and glamorous event, she could have least have kept the gown down…seems like she was trying to show those hairy legs off.

Needless to say, her hairy legs have been the talk of the town….beauty and fashion blogs have been debating and discussing it, even a local spa got in on the fiasco , D’Brows in D.C. is offering a “Mo’Nique Special” $9 off every body waxing service.

So I thought I’d join in too and list different techniques and products for hair removal

#1 Shaving
– It’s the most temporary method of hair removal because it merely cuts the hair off at the skin surface. Shaving does not make the hair shaft thicker, darker, or grow faster or slower.

#2 Plucking
– Plucking hair with tweezers is an effective way to remove hair but can be very time consuming. Great for eyebrows.

#3 Waxing
– Waxing is an effective method of removing large amounts of hair at one time. In this method wax is warmed to allow it to be spread easily over the skin in the direction of hair growth.

#4 Sugar Waxing
– Sugar waxing is a popular form of hair removal that works in the same way traditional waxing does. A thick sugary substance similar to caramel is spread on the skin in the direction of hair growth. The hair becomes embedded in the caramel. A cloth or paper strip is patted onto the caramel and then pulled off quickly in the opposite direction of the hair growth, pulling the hairs out of the follicles. The advantage of this method over traditional waxing is the clean up. The sugar substance is water-soluble and can be removed easier than wax by rinsing with water.

#5 Depilatories
– Depilatories use a chemical called thioglycolate mixed with sodium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide to literally melt the hair away. Thioglycolate disrupts disulfide bonds, which are chemical bonds that hold skin and hair cells together. The disulfide bonds that hold hair together contain more of the protein cystine than do the disulfide bonds that hold skin cells together. Thioglycolate is more effective on disulfide bonds that contain cystine. The major side effect of a depilatory is skin irritation because the chemical can melt away skin cells.

#6 Electrolysis

Electrolysis involves inserting a fine needle into the hair follicle and applying an electrical current to the follicle root. This procedure actually burns the hair root theoretically preventing it from producing more hair. Each hair follicle must be treated individually and may take several treatments to destroy the follicle. Electrolysis is a permanent form of hair removal but it has several drawbacks. First, there are no standardized licensing guidelines for electrolysis so finding an experienced, effective technician is difficult requiring talking to clients who have experienced permanent results. Second, this method requires repeated treatments for up to 12 to 18 months.

#7 Laser
Laser treatment of various skin conditions has blossomed, as laser technology has become more understood. Hair removal is a common application of laser technology, but it is not permanent and not for everyone. Lasers work by emitting light at various wavelengths, energy output, and pulse widths. The wavelength used determines the skin structure it will affect such as veins, melanin, or water. Most lasers used for hair removal target melanin and are therefore designed to burn structures that contain melanin. The more melanin, the more damage. It makes sense that laser hair removal works best for light-skinned people with dark hair.

#8 Vaniqa
Vaniqa is a prescription-only topical cream that has been FDA-approved for reducing and inhibiting the growth of unwanted facial hair. The active ingredient in Vaniqa is eflornithine hydrochloride, which has been used to treat African sleeping sickness and certain cancers. Vaniqa works by inhibiting an enzyme that is needed for cell reproduction and other cell functions necessary for hair growth. Vaniqa is applied twice a day to areas of unwanted facial hair. Noticeable results are usually observed after 4-8 weeks of therapy. Application must be continued for as long as inhibition of hair growth is desired. Vaniqa continues to reduce facial hair growth for up to 8 weeks after discontinuing treatment.
