Simple Every Woman Makeover

It’s been almost two years since I published the makeover I did on my twin sister, Erica (read: Sis Has Got Her Groove Back) back in April 2010.  If you can remember, Erica aka “Plain Jane” isn’t a beauty addict like myself.  As a mother, wife and events planner, she has a very busy schedule, so she prefers comfort and simplicity over the fuss of makeup.

Two years later, she has made changes to her makeup routine, but she still prefers to keep it to a minimal with just blush, eyeliner and lip gloss.   What can I say, she’s a natural beauty! Recently, she started her own events planning business and I had the opportunity of doing her makeup for her photo shoot.  She was aiming for a casually chic look, so she reminded me, nothing dramatic like last time.

I used NYX’s Caviar & Bubbles Eye Palette – Applied a neutral color to her lids and added a kick with the deeper browns in the crease.

I applied Ardell Lashes #113 for a little dramatic effect.

MAC’s Dainty Blush was applied to the apples of her cheeks.

Since I spiced it up with the eyes, I went subtle with the lips.  I completed the look with MAC’s Cremesheen lipstick in Ravishing and Laura Mercier’s Bare Beam gloss.

I think she’s simply gorgeous!

Vampires, Skeletons, & Geishas :: Halloween 2011

Unlike Halloween last year, I waited until the last minute to get my Halloween costume together…a few hours to be exact.  I ran out to the costume store, and tried to think of something creative, yet simple. I purchased fangs, white paint, black nails, lashes and a black leotard. I figured I’d be a sexy vampire.  I beat my face, but my costume on, but the only problem was, my vampire teeth wouldn’t stick (this is what happens when you procrastinate), so I had to quickly think of something else.

I went through some boxes and found a geisha costume I’ve never worn.  I figured this would work perfect since I only had my face painted white, I just had to change my lipstick and add blush.  I decided against the geisha wig and stuck with my own do.  Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of the full costume….

“We create another secret world, a place only of beauty. The very word “geisha” means artist, and to be a geisha is to be judged as a moving work of art.”

But I did enjoy seeing some of my fav celebs dress up for Halloween.  Take a look:

Who were you favs? Did you dress up for Halloween this year?

How Red Should I Go??? My Virtual Hair Makeover

I have been a redhead since birth…well maybe not since birth, I didn’t start to grow hair until the age of 2, but you get the picture.  In middle and high school they used to call my sister and I the “redhead twins”.  We were the “freckled face red haired girl[s]“, like in that Pippi Longstocking song.

Over the last three years, I’ve been having a lot fun being a blonde, but I’m ready to change it up for Fall.  I want to stick with red, but try a more flaming shade.  My natural hair color is a reddish-brown hue, I want to add more zest with either copper, burgundy or a rust color, but of course I need to choose a color that compliments my complexion, so the question is, how red should I go??

A burgundy red like Sharon Osbourne? Christina Hendricks & Angie Everheart’s carrot red? Or maybe something bold like Rihanna’s tomato red? I visited www.dailyglow.com for a virtual makeover, to test out some colors.  Here are my three favs:

Light Auburn, Medium Auburn or Pillarbox Red? Which do you like the best?

Makeover Monday’s :: Sis Has Got Her Groove Back

Hey Dolls! Sorry,  I know it’s been a while, but I’ve been extremely tied up this past week.  As a result I have plenty to post about this week.
This weekend, I got the chance to give my BFF, twin sis, Erica, a makeover. Erica is a young, beautiful, domestic diva (check out her blog www.sweetsandfonts.com) ,married and mother of two little ones (Chase 2, Carter 1 month).  She’s currently on maternity leave from her job as Meeting Planner and as you can pretty much tell, she rarely has time for pampering, so I thought I’d could help with that.
Erica is a nature beauty — fabulous skin kissed with freckles, beautiful brown eyes and nice full lips.  She’s into the natural look so when she wears make up she goes for light coverage and stays away from color, so I decided to add a little color to beautiful canvas.
Here is Erica before:
And this is Erica after her makeover:
Absolutely GAWJUS!!
So here’s what I did:
1.  Because Erica had a slight breakout, I primed her face and eyes with Cover FX Clearprep Matte Foundation Primer and Anti-Acne Treament.
2.  Applied corrector under her eyes to brighten and neutralize the darkness under her eyes.
3.  I colored in her brows with a brown pencil.
4.  I applied a neutral color all over her lid, to her brow bone.
5.  For her eyes, I used Sephora’s Ultimate Blockbuster Kit that she gave me for Christmas (that kit has really come in handy).  I applied pink shadow to her lid.  Then I used a frosted pink color in her inner corners.  I used purple and brown shadow for her outcorners and crease.
6.  I used the black gel liner in the kit to line her eyes.
7.  To give her lashes more volume, I used Lancome’s Hypnôse Drama Mascara.
8.  She doesn’t like to have anything on her lower lash line, so I used brown shadow instead of black to line her lone lash, so it wouldn’t look as hard.
9. For foundation, I used Clinique Superfit Foundation, which perfect for light to medium coverage.
10.  I dusted her cheeks with a pink rose color.
11.  Finally lined her lips with MAC’s Spice and filled then in with a tinted pink gloss.
My sis is VERY picky, so I was happy to know that she loved the new look….so did her hubby!

Makeover Mondays :: Anika’s Purple Haze Makeover

This past weekend I had the opportunity to makeover one of my closest friends, Anika.  Anika is a outgoing, student and mom-to-be who is new to the make-up game. I was actually suppose to help with her make-up for her baby shower on Saturday, but unfortunately due to a  time crunch, it didn’t happen.  Nevertheless, she still looked simply beautiful during her shower — glowing.

I wanted to make it up to her, so on Sunday I gave her a makeover.   Making her over didn’t require much, Anika has great skin, beautiful eyes and cheekbones, but she wanted a bold and colorful look, so we went with purple.

Here’s Anika before:
I decided to use the same colors I used in the “Purple Haze” tutorial, so I used the Maybelline EyeStudio palette in Legendary Lillac for the eye shadow.  I filled in her brows with black shadow.  Applied black liner to the top lash line and then used Stila’s Paint Pot in Starry Night to her lower lash line and dusted her cheeks with Rose.  I completed the look with a frosty purple lipstick on her lips.
Here’s the end result:

I don’t think this picture does her justice…maybe it was the lighting, but in person she looked even more GAWJUS!
The purple went lovely with her beautiful brown complexion.  Don’t you think?

The Snowmageddon Makeover

Another snow day and this day I decided to spend it with my mom. After much prodding, I was finally able to convince her to sit for a beauty make over.

My mom, Roxy has good features, but several of her complaints were her close set eyes, dark circles and full round face. Now I could do something about the close set eyes and dark circles, but as for the full face, she’ll haven to replace that cinnamon roll she had earlier with a carrot stick.

Here’s her before pic (she said I owe her big time for posting it):

After we accessed the flaws, she told me she wanted a glamorous, yet natural look. So here’s what I did:

1. After starting with a freshly cleansed, moisturized and primed face I applied concealer under her eyes, in the inner corner of her eyes, as well as the outer corners of her mouth and under her lower lips . This helped with dark pigmentation which is common for women of color as they age.

2. I used a medium coverage foundation as to not cover her freckles. I used Mary Kay’s Medium-Coverage Foundation in Bronze 500.

3. To warm her skin, I dusted her cheekbones with bronzer (MAC Bronzing Powder in Refined Golden)and to give her cheekbones more emphasis, I followed up with MAC Powder Blush in Blunt in the hollows of her cheek.

4. Her eyebrows are naturally arched, but I did have to fill them in with Georgio Armani’s Eyebrow Pencil in #2. Which goes on smoothly and it has a grooming brush on the tip. I then applied highlighter to her brow bone.

5. Because of her close set eyes, the idea was to pull the eyes apart. How I achieved that was by using a light color on the inner corners of the eye. Then I dusted a brown shimmer shadow on her lids and finished with a dark brown shadow on the outer corners and swept it into the crease.

6. I then applied black eyeliner (Stila Smudge Pot in Black)on the upper eye lids mid point to the out corners. To add a little pizazz and soften the look, I used Stila’s Smudge Pot in Starry Kit on the lower lash line, ensuring that I stopped the liner right at midpoint under the eye. This technique, again, pulls the eyes apart.

7. Roxy is fortunately blessed with thick, long lashes which unfortunately I did not inherit. Her lashes were finished with Maybelline’s Define-A-Lash Mascara in Very Black.

8. For her lips, I lined the lips with MAC’s Lip Pencil in Spice and filled in her lips with Sephora’s Super Shimmer Lip Gloss in Rosy Glow.

9. To finish the look, I applied MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish to set her make-up.

Here is the end result:

Rox in her mid 40′s and this makeover actually made her look 10 years younger. What do you think?
