$50 Drugstore Beauty Binge :: My Lastest Drugstore Beauty Products

Although I am a fan of  many high end cosmetic products, I’m no snob, there still a lot of drugstore products that can do the trick, sometimes, even better.  I’ve been on the quest for a new foundation and concealer, but didn’t want to send an arm and leg, so I did some research on reviews of drugstore products and headed to my local drugstore, CVS.   I went with the intent of only buying a new concealer and foundation, but of course ended up leaving with more.

Here’s what I picked up:

Neutrogena’s Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser ($7.99) – I have been trying out the oil cleansing method for about a month now and decided I needed a change.  I’ve tried this cleanser before and loved the way my skin felt, so I decided to purchase it.  No harsh chemical sulfates, parabens, petrochemicals, dyes, phthalates.  So it’s gentle, and with the salicylic acid, it’s very effective for someone like myself who suffers from mild acne.

Monistat’s Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel – I know this may sound a bit odd, but it’s actually a great makeup primer (check out my review from 3 years ago).  It contains dimethicone, which is the primary ingredient in high-end primers and it was only $8! It spreads like butter and has a silky finish.

Maybelline’s Fit Me Concealer ($6.99) – I researched reviews on a drugstore undereye concealer and saw a lot of good reviews on this product.  I’ve only used it for a day, but I can say that it went on smoothly and evenly and provided good coverage.  I wanted a highlight effect so the shade I purchased was “Medium 25″, which is a few shades lighter than my complexion.

Revlon’s Colorstay Foundation for Normal/Oily Skin ($13.49) – I some great reviews on this foundation as far as finish, coverage and length in wear.  I tried it this morning, it was an easy application, lightweight but great coverage.  They said it stays for 24 hours, I won’t be wearing it that long, but hopefully it does a good 9 hours.  One thing I will mention is that it has a matte finish, so if you experience dryness, you might want to mix a little with your moisturizer.

Aveeno’s Active Naturals Ultra-Calming Makeup Removing Wipes ($7.99) – I LOVE these wipes! No dryness, no icky residue and removes of my makeup.

I used all of these products last night and this morning.  Take a look:

NEW Beauty Tip Video On Using Dental Picks For Lashes

I LOVE a dramatic look, without  too much fuss, so I always apply mascara on both my upper and lower lashes.  Sometimes it can get a little messy, depending on the size of the mascara wand.  If it’s too big, chances are, the mascara will usually end up under my eye.  Some beauty experts suggest using a business card or credit card, when applying mascara to avoid that problem, but I’ve found a better solution using dental picks.

Check out the video below to see how it works:

Dentek Dental Picks have a bristled end that help with applying mascara, separating lashes and getting ride of clumps.  You can find these at your local drugstore, but I purchased a pack of 100 at the Dollar Store.

So what do you think?  Do you apply mascara on your lower lashes?  Would you use dental picks?

Review :: Croc 2 Infrared Flat Irons

I was looking for new flat irons and came across Croc Infrared Flat Irons.  I immediately looked them up on Folicia to check out the reviews.  Folicia actually had the Croc 2 Infrared Flat Irons listed on their Top Picks for thick, coarse and/or curly hair below the shoulder and it had great reviews from consumers.

Here’s the run down:

The Croc 2 Infra-red 1Inch Flat Iron is internationally patented to combine ceramic, tourmaline, titanium and infrared technology. It reconditions and reconstructs your hair while maintaining health and providing powerful styling. Faster heat penetration makes styling quicker which keeps your hair healthier.  With a 450F maximum heat setting, this iron is perfect for giving or maintaining keratin treatments. But remember, if you are turning up the temp, make sure to use a heat protectant!

Features
Infrared Benefits:

Balances moisture

Prevents hair damage and dandruff

Stimulates hair growth

Protects color treated hair

Removes bacteria and odor

Keeps hair healthy by sealing moisture and adding silky shine

Technology:

“Dual Plate” technology maintains even heat across the plates at all times

Infra-red heat is highly efficient, fast acting, non-toxic and non-allergic

Fastest heat-up and recovery processes

Digital temperature control offers 25 heat settings from 280F – 450F in increments of 10F

Perfect for keratin treated hair

Seals in moisture, adds silkiness and shine, and maintains style all day60% faster and more effective straightening or styling than the average flat iron

Industry’s first environmentally friendly “Green Digital Display”Automatic shut-off

I just colored my hair, so maintaining its moisture, along with taming my thick hair, were SUPER important to me.  At a costly $160, I was a little worried that they might not work as good as my Amika’s, but luckily, I have a 30% off coupon and ULTA has a great return policy, so I purchased it.

The first time I used it, I didn’t use the infrared feature (I actually didn’t know how to turn that feature on).  I went up to 420 to test them out.  My hair felt very silky and didn’t have that burnt hair smell, which was a plus.  I used them again on my mom, who has fine hair.  I actually figured out how to use the infrared feature with her (push the power button twice).  I noticed a difference when I used the infrared on a strand of her hair, it felt more soft and silky.  Usually, she would get on me about spending $160 on some flat irons, but she was pretty satisfied with the product and results.

So here’s what I think:

Love the digital temperature control

Love that it heats up super fast

Love that automatic cut off

Love that my hair gets straight with a single pass

Love that I didn’t have deal with the burnt hair smell

Here’s what I recommend:

Get a warranty! Majority of the negative comments came from a defect on the iron after constant use over a couple of months/years.

Use a heat protectate product.

If your hair is color treated, relaxed and/or not in good condition, don’t crank up the heat.

Do It Yourself :: Fix Your Broken Powder

How many times has your powder/blush broken in its compact, leaving you with nothing but a BIG mess?  I know for myself , this has happened numerous of times, and I have been forced with the decision to either waste money by throwing it away, put the compact and leftover powder in a plastic sandwich bag, which can be very messy, or dish on more bucks by buying a loose powder container.

Luckily, I came across a solution from fellow blogger, Katrina Lomidze on “How to Fix Broken Powder Makeup” by simply using rubbing alcohol.

I know you’re probably wondering about the odor and if the alcohol will cause your skin to dry, but as Katrina mentioned in her post, alcohol dries quickly, so it will evaporate and the odor will go away.  Also, the more alcohol concentrate, the faster it dries, but if you leave it out to dry overnight, any percetnage can work.

One of my favorite MAC bronzers had broken and saving it was creating a mess, so following Katrina’s steps by using rubbing alcohol, here’s what I did:

Applied several drops of alcohol to the compact.

Then using my fingers, I began to mix the alcohol with the powder.  You’ll notice it will start to turn into a paste, which will make it easier to smooth it out.

Finally, I let the powder sit overnight to thoroughly dry.

It isn’t as perfect and as smooth as when I purchased it, but at least it’s all in one piece.  So the next time your powder brakes, just use these easy steps to help salvage it and save you money!

How Melissa Got Her Closet Back

Last Friday, I did a post on organizing beauty products and tools (“Beauty Junkies Stay Organized“) as inspired by InStyle Magazine.  Interesting enough, over the weekend I got caught up on blog reading and came across a great post on La Dolce Vita titled “Beautifully Organized: Hanging Earrings“.  The title is pretty much self-explanatory.  The post featured decorative and stylish ways to display and organize earrings.

The post not only inspired me to organize my jewelry collection, but also, my entire closet.  By the time I was finished sorting through clothes, earrings, necklaces, purses and shoes I had 6 big bags of stuff to donate to my local thrift store.

Besides throwing out old clothes and accessories, this is how I got my closet back:

(1) I used a shoe rack and hung it on one of my closet doors and placed the shoes that I wear the most on the rack.

(2) I used a pants hanger to hang all of my belts and ties.

(3)  I picked up a jewelry organizer from Marshall’s for $14.  I absolutely LOVE this organizer, because it doesn’t take up much space, I can simply hang it up in my closet, also each jewelry piece has it’s own compartment so they don’t get tangled AND it’s double sided.

(4) Besides the shoe rack hanging on my closet door, I have three other shoe organizers that hang from the closet poles.  These come in handy for my larger shoes and other accessories that I want out of the way.

Well, enough about my closet.  Hopefully this post has inspired you to tidy up your closet as well.  If so, I’d love to hear your ideas on how you keep it organized.

Beauty Junkies Stay Organized

As you all should know, I am a beauty product/tool junkie!  Seriously, I have products everywhere!   In my bathroom, I have a cabinet filled with beauty tools (flat iron, curling irons, blow dryers, combs, clips, etc.) and products (shampoos, conditioners, styling products), and I also have a cart holding my everyday stuff (more shampoos, conditioners, styling products and makeup).  I have a big case of makeup, that I keep in my living room, and in my closet I have a self for more things that I don’t use as much.  So, as you can see, organization is essential for me.

I came across article in the latest issue of InStyle Magazine “Vanity Sanity” on how to keep your beauty essentials organized, so I thought I would share some ideas with you.

1. Containers – Use containers or jars to hold your cotton balls, q-tips, and/or sponges.  The colorful stackable containers in photo 1 are from Zak Designs.  I purchased inexpensive glass jars from Ikea.

2.  Wall Mount or ShelvesThe Vitra Uten Silo Wall Organizer is the perfect organizer for your beauty products and tools. It can hold a lot of items, without taking up much space, but it’s pretty pricey…$425, to be exact. An alternative would be to purchase inexpensive shelves and mount them on your wall.

3.  Labels - Keep your products organized by labeling them by the date of purchase. This helps you remember what products to trash when they expire.  These label package from Beauty Alert come with 20 labels in four categories:  3, 6, 12 & 18+.

4.  Luxury Deluxe Wood Cosmetics Box w/Mirror by Lori GreinerAvoid the cosmetics crush with this deluxe wood makeup box with built-in mirror. Spacious and separated into four different levels with swing-out doors and magnetic closures, it offers ample room for 30 lipsticks and numerous other cosmetics, like blushes, shadows, pencils, mascara, foundations, nail polishes, and more. From Lori Greiner.  Available at www.QVC.com for only $69.12

5.  Brush Holder - Keep your brushes organized, simply by using a glass, metal or plastic container or cup.

6.  Cosmetic Vanity Organizer - This organizer is perfect for your everyday essentials.  Available at www.touchofclass.com

Saw this on on another site and had to share it with you. Sephora has introduced their new Double-Ended Brushes.

Sephora Collection Double-Ended Smoky Eye Brush ($18) – Equipped with a slanted eyeliner brush and a smudge dome in purple.

Sephora Collection Double-Ended Perfect Complexion Brush ($35) – With its pretty-in-pink brush fibers, this multitasking must-have features a two-in-one foundation and powder brush for a flawless finish.

Sephora Collection Double-Ended Every Day Eye Brush ($18) – Successful shading is what this brush is all about with this orange brush.

Sephora Collection Double-Ended Grab’n Go Brush ($32) – Perfect for applying all-over shadow, loose powder, and compact foundation. One brush, two sides, three effects

Sephora Collection Double-Ended Winged Brush ($18) – Use this yellow brush to draw a fine line, then apply cream or powder to your eyes.

Looks pretty crazy, I know, but these brushes would come in handy when I’m on the go and I don’t want to bring my whole brush kit with me and they’re cost efficient – you’re getting two brushes for the price of one. Definitely can’t beat that.

Sephora is calling me!

Brush Strokes :: Sonia Kashuk Eyeliner Brush

I was recently looking for a new eyeliner brush, something slicker than my MAC angled brush (263) and I came across the Sonia Kashuk eyeliner brush at Target. Normally, I only like to purchase high quality brushes but I was loving the curvy black handle so I thought I’d give it a try and I must admit I LOVE IT!!! The ergonomic handle and fine tip makes it easy to draw the perfect line, not to mention the handle is very chic. Yes, it is a synthetic brush, so it’s not as absorbent and doesn’t distribute color as well as a natural brush, but since I will only be using it for gel liner and it was only $10, I think it was well worth it.

If you’re looking for a new eyeliner brush, I highly recommend the Sonia Kashuk Synthetic Precision Eyeliner Brush.

MAC’s New Brush Finder | Fashion Mask : No More Messy Clothes | Rock The Vote

I received a lot of feedback from my first video “Brushes 101”, glad to know it was helpful…but what’s even more helpful, MAC has now introduced the Brush Finder to its website. The newly interactive brush finder helps you find over 40 high quality brushes to add to your kit.

I’m loving this!!! So now instead of running to the MAC store, whenever you’re looking for a new brush you can simply visit www.maccosmetics.com and the brush finder can help you.

Something else I’m loving is the True Fit Try On Fashion Mask. The disposable Fashion Mask is used by women when putting on garments to prevent their lipstick and make-up from rubbing off on their clothes. This is not only a perfect idea for the ladies but also for retailers to protect their investments in their clothing. Can’t tell you how many times I went to try on something and noticed make-up on it. Looks kind of creepy, but it does the job. For more info on the fashion mask, visit http://www.truefittryon.com/fashion_mask.html

My 1st Video :: Make-Up Brushes 101
