Sock It To Me, Baby :: Mastering the Sock Bun

I remember growing up, watching my cousin always make the perfect ballerina bun and me always wishing I could do the same with my hair.  There seemed to be a science to the chic and go-to-do look, that I just couldn’t master, so I just settled for messy ponytails instead.  But, now that everyone from my little 4-year-old cousins to Blue Ivy’s mama have returned to the bun trend, I thought I’d might take a try at mastering it.

So here’s what I did:

- Took an old sock and cut off the bottom part and rolled it up into the shape of a doughnut.

- Pulled my hair up into a high ponytail.

- Pulled my hair through the center of the doughnut/sock.  I left a enough out to fold under.

- I folded my hair under the sock

- Then, I pushed through the center of the sock and rolled it down until it was on my head.

- I used hair pins and styling gel, to secure any loose hairs.

If you’re looking for perfection, the technique will require a little patience and I would advise not rocking it on a windy day.  I’d like to think messy buns show personality though.

So, I want to hear from you.  What do you think of the bun trend? Would you try a sock bun? What other techniques have you tried to get the perfect bun?

I decided to play in the purples (Orchid, Amethyst and Royal) and do a smokey eye…

So what do you think of the colors?

For the Girl on the Go! Dry Shampoo Review

Have you ever experienced those moments in which your hair was in desperate need of a shampoo job, but you just didn’t have the time to fit into your busy schedule at that time?  Well, I experience those moments all the time, and I’m sure you have as well, especially around the holiday season — between working, finishing up Christmas shopping and organizing/attending holiday parties, there’s simply not enough time. And that’s why dry shampoo has recently become my bff.

Dry shampoo has be around for ages, but has recently has gotten its buzz back by beauty experts.  Ideal for extending a blowout, in between washes or when water isn’t available,  dry shampoo helps absorb oil from you scalp and hair, making it look, feel and smell fresh.  It consist of usually a mixture of aerosol propellants, absorbing agents, solvents, conditioning agents and fragrance.  There are organic shampoos available with natural ingredients. Dry shampoo comes  a powder, liquid  and aerosol spray form. I prefer the spray because it’s less of a mess to deal with.

It’s important to remember, that dry shampoo isn’t meant to take the place of regularly washing your hair with water — it doesn’t get rid of dirt and dandruff, just helps in between washes.

Celebrating 30 :: 21 With 9 Years of Experience

“Enjoy yourself. That’s what your 20s are for. Your 30s are to learn the lessons; your 40s are to pay for the drinks.” – Carrie Bradshaw Sex in the City

I celebrated the mighty milestone of turning the BIG 30 last week.  There’s so much fuss about turning 30 — the clock starts to tick for a career, getting married, having children, and yes, AGING…the pressure!  I didn’t know whether to be excited, tense or indifferent really.  Nevertheless, I decided embrace it and celebrate as usual.  Besides, I’d like to think I always get better in time.

Here’s to 30 more awesome years!

Reach New Lengths With Spider Lashes

Happy Halloween loves!  As you all know, I LOVE lashes! I’ve always wanted to try the retro “Spider Lashes” look,  that Kim Kardashian always rocks.  I know many aren’t a fan of clumpy and extended lashes, but I think it’s perfect for a dramatic look.  So during Tropical Storm Sandy, I had nothing, but time on my hands, so I decided to get creative.

For the top lash line I glued a strip of faux lashes and I also applied individual lashes to the lower lash line.  I have never been able to master the art of applying individual lashes and have never applied faux lashes to my lower lash line, but with a little patience, tweezers and magnifying mirror, I got it done.  I didn’t use any mascara for the look.

Here’s what I got:

If you want to try this look yourself, but don’t  want to use faux lashes, you can use a lengthening mascara with a large wand. Start from your lash base and wiggle the wand upwards, coating every lash.  You can even use both faux lashes and mascara to make it pop more.

Of course, spider lashes isn’t your everyday look, but something different to rock when you want to bring on the drama and even perfect for Halloween.

So, what do you think?  Is this a look you’re willing to try?

Falling Slowly

It’s been two long months…I know, I’ve been a very bad blogger.  So much has been going on over the last couple of months (classes, exams, life, etc.), but I haven’t forgotten about you.  Trying to get things back on track….back to posting on a weekly basis.

We’re now into my favorite season of Fall, which means, lots of smokey eye, berry lips, dark colors and of course, football!  So much to cover this season.  So, if you have any questions, or want to see a product or technique discussed, feel free to leave a comment or e-mail me.

In the meantime, I’d like to know, what are you most looking forward to this season?

Real Friends Don’t Let Friends Leave Out Busted…or Do They?

Looking at pictures of Foxy Brown performing with Nicki Minaj at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC earlier this week, I was left with a bunch of questions.  First, let me begin by saying, I was happy to see Foxy and Nicki come together without all the usual drama, and yes, I am a fan of them both, especially Foxy.  I still remember seeing her for the first time in the “Ain’t No” video with Jay-Z and thinking how beautiful she was, and recording her songs on the radio, and listening to them over and over again, to memorize the lyrics…she was BAD!

But back to the questions….what did Foxy have on? Why? And most importantly, where were her friends? Now, this post purpose isn’t to bash Foxy Brown, because we’ve all had our moments, but, as my father has always told me, your real friends tell you the truth.  Where were her friends to tell her that she was stuck in a time warp?

Ultimately, this all got me to thinking about the bigger question, “would you tell a friend if she looked bad”?    Is it a friend’s place to tell you that your hairstyle or your outfit is unflattering?  And, how would you feel, being told that your lipstick shade is horrid?

My mom and sister will be the FIRST to tell me that my foundation is too orange or that they dislike my new hairstyle, and as much as I hate to hear it, I do value their opinions. Maybe, it might be different coming from someone else.

How do you feel? Are you honest with your friends about their looks, or do you sugarcoat your opinions in the name of friendship?

Review :: Suave’s Keratin Infusion

My sisters have been raving bout how soft and smooth their hair is after using Suave’s new Keratin line.  If you’ve been following my blog, you know that I have VERY thick hair, and as a product junkie, I couldn’t resist the urge to try it out myself.  I went to Target and Walmart (they only had the serum at Walmart) to purchase Suave’s Keratin Infusion Smoothing Shampoo, Conditioner, Leave-In Conditioner and Serum.  I spent about $10 on all 4 products…WINNING!!!

Anyway, I shampooed my hair and combed the shampoo through and I did the same when I followed up with the conditioner.  I then applied a small amount of the leave-in conditioner and serum to my hair and flat-ironed it.

This is my new favorite!  I LOVE the way my hair feels and smells, just like how it is when I visit the salon.  It’s amazingly soft, smooth, bounces when I walk, smells great, and for $10 a HUGE bargain.

Suave Kertain Infusion is available at Target and Walmart. Try it and tell me how you like it.
