Sweet Thang :: NEW Flushed Cheeks Tutorial

As mentioned in our Keeping Up With The Joneses :: Fall 2011 Beauty Trends post,  flushed cheeks are a top trend for this fall season.  If you take a look at any of the NYFW footage/photos or flip through any of your favorite beauty/fashion magazines you’re sure to see this trend.

Not only does this look strengthen your cheek bones, but it also provides a very youthful, feminine and sun-kissed look with minimal effort.  Check out my NEW tutorial on how to achieve this look:

This look very sweet look.  Remember, for a subtle look, just use a pink, peach or coral blush and apply to the apples of your cheeks.  For a more dramatic look, apply bronzer in a c-shape in the crease of your cheeks OR you could do both.  To make the look even more feminine, pair it up with a peachy, pale pink or nude lipstick

Here are some blushes I recommend:  Lorac’s Blush/Bronzer Duo in Hot Flash, Stila’s Custom Color Blush, and Lorac’s Baked Matte Satin Blush in Exposed.

Keeping Up With The Joneses :: Fall 2011 Beauty Trends

Fall doesn’t officially start until the 23rd, but judging from this upcoming weekend’s weather report, it’s pretty much already here. So time to pull out the layers and switch up the trends…and in case you aren’t familiar with the Fall 2011 beauty trends, here they are, fresh off the runway:

Red Lips  – Nothing is more daring and liberating than a woman in red…lipstick that is.in different shades variations of wine red, fire engine red, red velvet to neon red  to matte or shiny .

Remember: Blue based for fair skin and orange based or deep reds for dark complexions

Spider/Spiky Lashes – Clothes shouldn’t be the only thing you’re layering on this Fall…how about mascara?  Long, thick and voluminous lashes are  in this season, so don’t forget to pile on the mascara on both upper and lower lashes and don’t be afraid to try falsies.

Remember:  It’s all about the layers. Apply one coat of mascara to lower lash then top lash. Let dry and repeat the steps.

Smoky Metallic Eyes - Silver, gold and bronze, oh my! It never hurts to add a little sparkle to your palette.

Remember:  If you have dark skin, avoid silver and instead use golden or bronze colors.

Dramatic Eyeliner - Time the bring on the drama! For all my Drama Queens or Kings, if you really want to make a statement, try going bold with black eyeliner.

Flushed Cheeks – A simple way too add a little glow to your complexion is using pink blush.

Remember:  Cream blush is great for normal skin, but for oily or dry skin, stick with the powder.

So what look will you be trying this Fall?

All The Pregnant Ladies :: Pregnancy Makeup Tips from Bobbi Brown

I’m sure you’ve all heard the news that Beyonce and Jay-Z are expecting their first child.  She sort of announced it (I say sort of because she didn’t say anything, she just opened her blazer and showed her lovely baby bump and rubbed it) at the end of her performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards.

Look at her, just glowing! Congrats to Bey and Jay!

Anyway, since there seems to be something in the water, I thought it would be a great time to do a post on pregnancy makeup tips. I know, during those nine long months, you body doesn’t seem like its own.  With morning sickness, swollen ankles and all the only symptoms that come along with pregnancy, the last thing you’re probably thinking about is “giving good face”, but you can still keep it glam and simple while preggers.

Makeup extraordinaire, Bobbi Brown suggest:

What about those days when you don’t have time for a full make up or you really just need a lift? “Blush is the best way to give yourself a boost,” says Brown. Her signature technique is to apply a bronzer or skin tone blush across the whole cheek as a base and then a splash of pink right on the ‘apple’ for a natural, I-just-finished-exercising, look. Pregnant women can also give themselves a beauty and mood boost by spritzing on a clean, fresh scent. Choose something light and pretty, says Brown, since your sense of smell is heightened during pregnancy.

“I like to recommend that pregnant women keep their beauty routine simple and easy,” says Brown. Her list of essentials includes a concealer for blotchy or uneven areas and dark undereye circles, yellow-toned foundation (which Brown swears is best for all skin types), a pink blush, and your favourite lip colour. For best results, Brown recommends first putting on concealer (one shade lighter than your foundation) just where it seems necessary, because that may be all you need. Then apply foundation, but only on the areas without concealer. Doubling up just cancels out the effect of the concealer, she says.

She says: “For many women, pregnancy is a time when their bodies do not feel like their own. Make-up can be used as a tool to feel pretty and in control. In fact, one of the biggest beauty mistakes pregnant women can make is opting out of make-up altogether.”

Instead, adjust your skincare regime for those pregnancy-related changes. “Add more moisture to combat dryness or switch to oil-free formulas if your skin is feeling greasy,” says Bobbi.

During pregnancy, dark often appear on your skin. “To cover hyper-pigmentation, apply a corrective concealer using a brush,” recommends Bobbi. “Apply foundation over your entire face, using a light touch to avoid wiping away the concealer. Use your fingers to press additional foundation into areas where needed, and then set it with powder.”

July 4th Pin Up Girl Inspired Look

Independence Day is this upcoming Monday, and I’m sure a lot of us will be celebrating with cook outs, parties and/or viewing the fireworks to show our patriotism.  I was really thinking hard about a look for the 4th of July…maybe something funky like red, white and blue on the eyes or blue smokey eye and red lips or even blue lips, but then I thought about it, nothing is more patriotic than the retro pinup girl look.

Pin up models like, Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable and Jane Russell and work from artists such as Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren and George Petty were ever present in the lockers of the G.I.’s during World War II.

It’s a very sexy, yet simple look.  Here’s how I achieved the look:

- Applied a warm taupe shadow on my eyelid.
- Brown eyeshadow in the crease.
- Black eyeliner was a staple during that time, so it’s a must for the look.  I applied a thick line gel/cream black eyeliner.
- White eyeliner on the waterline. Remember wearing white eyeliner helps open your eyes.
- Black eyeshadow along the lower lash line
-  I wanted the big flirty lashes so I applied faux lashes.
- I wanted rosey cheeks so I used Laura Mercier’s blush in Spiced Cider.
- Finally finished up with the classic pinup girl red lips. I used L’Oreal Infalliable Le Rouge in Refined Ruby.  This one of my favorite lipstick brands because it’s very hydrating, so it keeps your lips moist without drying them.

Hope you all have a safe wonderful 4th!

Braxton Family Makeup Faux Pas

I have heard and seen so much ranting and raving over Toni Braxton and her 4 sisters new reality show “Braxtons Family Values”, I couldn’t wait until I finally caught it on tv (didn’t know it was available on WE TV’S website until writing this post).  I have so much to say….where do I start???

Well, first let me say, that I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Toni Braxton. She has always been one of my favorite “SANGERS”, as Cee Lo Green would put it.  I was in elementary school when her self titled debut album came out.  I remember my sister and I had our little performance to “Another Sad Love Song”. Her soulful voice and the emotions that she gives off in each song always seems authentic and relatable (Remember when she broke it down in the “Seven Whole Days” video with the finger pointing, head shaking, hand on the hip sass).

Ok, enough with beating around the bush…so I watched all three episodes and I honestly have to say, although the show is very amusing, I was a little disappointed with the ladies hair and makeup.  I really expected better from a glamour girl like Toni, and especially from a diva like Tamar.  I’m not really going to go there with the bad wigs and weaves, although, I will say, they could learn a thing or two from Mama Braxton.

So, let’s do a makeup play by play like they do in football, shall we? The main culprits are Tamar and Toni.

It looks like someone slapped blush all over her cheek…so 80′s, don’t you think?  This seems to be a trend amongst all the sisters.

In some of the clips, Tamar actually reminds me of Latoya Jackson.  I’m not sure why her blush was applied from her cheek to the side of her nose, but, again it’s too much blush and it should be kept in the zone — on the apples of the cheek.

It looks like her foundation maybe too light for her and they didn’t do a good job with blending the highlighter and blush…it looks completely isolated.

I left out another pic of Tamar in the original post

She’s just overdoing it with the eyes…it looks a little draggish to me.

Since the Braxtons live in The A, they should seek the services of whomever does the The Real Housewives of Atlanta’s makeup…Season 3!!

Get Right for Date Night

After being stuck in hibernation for nearly over three months, many of us are starting to know how it feels to be sociable again.  Since the weather has warmed up, we don’t mind happy hours, hitting the town til 3 in the morning on a work night, meeting new people and even going on dates! Yes, I said it!

I know, I know, after 90 or so days of no socialization, the last thing you want to think about is “The First Date” *cue dramatic sound effects “dun dun dun”* The nervousness of making a good first impression is taking over.

No need to fear, you don’t have to look like Beyonce to get a good reaction, just simply emphasizing your great qualities will do the trick, and here’s how:

1. Pick One Main Area On The Face You Want to Emphasize

You don’t want to try too hard and go too dramatic on your first date. So avoid doing both bold eyes and bold lips. Instead, either focus on playing up your eyes, whether you choose to make them smokey or really open them up with bright colors and then play down your lips with a barely-there color OR a bold color on your lips and a subtle eye.

2. Highlight Your Eyes

A great way of bringing out your eyes more, is by adding a small amount of white eyeshadow or liner to the very corner. This will really give your eyes a wide-eyed look and help set them out, showing off your beautiful eye color.

3. Always Go For The Gloss

Whether you’re using lipstick or not, a gloss is a must on a first date. It’ll make your lips look softer, moister, and definitely more kissable. Avoid sticky glosses, as it can be annoying if you decide to go for the first kiss.

4. Go Easy On The Perfume

While you definitely do want to make sure you smell good for your first date, try not to overload yourself. At this point you won’t entirely know what types of scents your date finds attractive.  My personally preference for date nights is Flower Bomb, trust, he’ll love it! Also, if you’re going to your date straight from work, always carry a sample size with you.

5. Take The Occasion Into Consideration

Take into consideration the location of your date. For an evening date at a classier restaurant you will want to wear a different look of make-up for example than if you were meeting at a local coffee house for lunch.

6. Less-Is-More

Remember this is your first date, and most guys actually prefer women who look more natural and whose make-up isn’t noticeable rather than women where it’s clearly obvious she’s painted the colors of the rainbow on her face.

7. Beauties To Bring Along

You should always come prepared with your makeup essentials.  Here’s what you should have in your makeup bag: pressed powder (to reduce shine), lip gloss, eye drops (to reduce redness), bronzer (use for blush or to give you a sun-kissed glow) and eyeliner (black and white).
Keep these tips in mind for your next date to help make a great first impression.

Pretty in Pink :: Nicki Minaj ‘Pink Sunday’

This past Sunday, Nicki Minaj was in DC for her “I Am Still Music” tour. I didn’t attend the concert, but I was at the after party - PINK SUNDAY, presented by Dave & Ray Ent. & The Standard Events.

Nicki Minaj

Dave (Dave & Ray Ent.), Omari (The Standard Events), Ray (Dave & Ray Ent.)

Lovely ladies in pink
Pink Hair

Even a pink car

I decided to go along with the theme and wear pink (or as I like to say it “pank” my favorite color)…well fuchsia, close enough. Fuchsia is not a color I often rock, so I needed some inspiration for makeup ideas.

A black smokey or winged eye with a pink nude lip seemed to be the popular trend with fuchsia.  I lined my eyes with Maybelline’s black gel liner, applied a bubble gum pink blush, Bobbi Browns blush in pale pink, and  LORAC’s Couture Shine Liquid Lipstick in Muse to my lips. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that gloss!

Glitter Valentine’s Day Look :: LASplash Cosmetics

I decided to do another Valentine’s Day look. With this second look, I wanted to do something that was less dramatic and more feminine — Keywords: pink and glitter!  So here’s what I did:

To hold the eyeshadow and glitter, I applied LASplash Cosmetic’s  Eyeshadow/Sealer Base
I applied pink eyeshadow all over my lid.  I’m not sure the name of the eyeshadow, but it’s from my Sephora kit.

For the pink glitter, I applied LASplash Cosmetic’s Crystallized Glitter in Chic on my lid as well.

Next, I applied black eyeshadow to the outer corner of my lid and into my crease.

I then lined both my top and bottom lash lines with black eyeliner.

Applied Maybelline’s Falsies mascara and glued on fake lashes.

Brushed my cheeks with Bobbi Browns Pale Pink blush

I finished the color with hot pink lipstick.

So what do you think?

Valentine’s Day Inspired Look :: Illamasqua Throb Collection

I wanted to do a Valentine’s Day look post, so I went surfing on the net for inspiration and came across the ad campaign for Illamasqua’s ‘Throb’ Collection for Valentine’s Day.
The artistry was amazing — I immediately fell in love and thought I would give it a shot.
From viewing the photo, it looks like the artist used a airbrush machine, unfortunately, I don’t have an airbrush machine, so I had to do everything from hand.
I found a heart stencil online, which I used to form the heart shape.  My heart isn’t as precise as the model’s, but, hey, this was my first time.

I had to make the inside the heart pale, so I used the lightest foundation I had, which was Mary Kay® Full-Coverage Foundation in Ivory
For a thick and heavy brow, I used MAC’s Brow Pen in Spiked

For the eyes, I spread an ivory color all over my lid, in the crease and under my brow bone.  I then applied MAC’s Brown Down in the crease. I lined my eyes with Maybelline’s Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black and above that I used Givenchy Magic Khol Eyeliner Pencil in #2 White.

I applied big and flirty lashes.

For the rouge cheeks, I used Laura Mercier’s Spiced Cider Blush

It doesn’t look exactly like the Illamasqua campaign ad, but still a lot of fun to do.

What do you think?
