My Hair & Skincare Routine (Oil Cleansing Method) :: Castor, Coconut & Grapeseed Oils

As a beauty addict, I’m always on the quest for new amazing products especially if I can save money.  I’ve been hearing a lot about the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) and how these same oils are great for your hair, so I have been using  natural oils, such as castor oil, coconut oil, and grapeseed oil, in my hair care and skincare routine.

CASTOR OIL

Castor oil contains vitamin E, minerals, proteins, antibacterial and anti-fungicidal properties. Scientists attribute its healing benefits to its unusual chemical composition, which consists of a triglyceride of fatty acids with ricinoleic acid of up to 90 percent. In addition to healing benefits, castor oil also contains anti-inflammatory properties, all of which are related to healthy hair growth.

BENEFITS

  • Highly effective remedy for hair thinning and hair loss.
  • Applying to scalp prevents dry and itchy scalp.
  • The oil mends hair scales bringing back shine and strength to the dull and lifeless hair.
  • The ricinoleic acid in castor oil works to inhibit many viruses and bacteria, to cure acne.
  • The glossiness of the bean oil makes it a popular choice for lip balms.
  • Keeps the skin looking smooth, youthful and unlined.
  • Thickens eyelashes and eyebrows

REMEMBER

Castor oil isn’t a moisturizer, it’s a sealant.  So make sure you use a water based moisturizer for your hair. Castor oil can be drying, so adding olive oil or another moisturizing oil can prevent dryness of the skin.

WHERE TO BUY:  Most supermarkets or pharmacies may also sell castor oil in small bottles in the laxatives section.

COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil has numerous benefits for both hair and skin. It is nutrition for all hair types, helping hair to shine, softening hair, remedying damaged hair by helping to preserve the hair’s natural proteins  and can even providing relief from dandruff.  For the skin, coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer for all skin types, and especially for dry and older skin. Coconut oil is so good at smoothing out the appearance of wrinkles and helping with skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis that it’s often added to commercial skin care products.  And there’s more––the lauric acid in coconut oil has both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties

BENEFITS

  • It is effective in reducing the protein loss for damaged and undamaged hair.
  • It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair.
  • Provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair.
  • Coconut oil also helps in treating various skin problems including  dry skin, psoriasis, dermatitis, eczema and other skin infections.
  • Prevents premature aging and degenerative diseases due to its remarkable properties.
  • Great as an effective natural deodorant.

REMEMBER

Look for extra virgin, that has not been hydrogenated, bleached, refined or deodorized.  This form of coconut oil is the most safe and skin friendly. It has a very low melting point and does not solidify on your skin, clogging up the pores, as is the case with other coconut oils.  A small amount goes a long way.  Too much oil will leave your hair greasy and stringy.  Also, do not leave the oil in your hair for more than a day without washing it, your hair will become greasy.

WHERE TO BUY:  Health food stores like Whole Foods

GRAPESEED OIL

Grape seed oil contains high quantities of Vitamin E and F and also minerals like zinc potassium, copper, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and selenium. But most of all grape seed oil is rich in proanthocyanidins (OPC) a compound that is high in antioxidants which are 50 times more effective than Vitamin E and 20 times stronger than Vitamin C. Antioxidants are found in grape skins and seeds and are more concentrated in red and black grapes.  These great components make grape seed extract an asset in the production of massage oils and balms, hair and hygienic products, face and body moisturizers, as well as in sunblocks and sunburn ointments.

BENEFITS

  • It contains 73% of linoleic acid which may be beneficial in the treatment of acne, dermatitis, allergic reactions, atopic eczema and dry and itchy skin.
  • Protects against UV radiation, and lightens the effects on age spots and pigmented skin caused by ultra violet rays.
  • The antioxidant activity may help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks, and saggy skin activity may help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, stretch marks, and saggy skin.
  • The grapeseed oil for hair protects the hair from heat.
  • Because it is lightweight, it is quickly absorbed by the scalp and moisturizes the hair follicles from the roots down.

REMEMBER

When buying Grape Seed Oil, look for cold-pressed organic oil since it retains most of the natural beneficial ingredients compared to the chemically pressed oils.

WHERE TO BUY:  Grape Seed Extract is available at most herbal food and drug stores. It can be purchased in the form of capsules, tablets, oil and powder.

MY SKINCARE REGIME:  THE OIL CLEANSING METHOD

I have been experiencing issues with acne and redness lately, and  I’ve  heard so many great benefits of using the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM), that I decided to give it a try.  I know using oil to cleanse your face sounds pretty strange, but judging from the reviews I’ve read, it’s worth trying.

HOW IT WORKS

Cleansers, exfoliates, astringents, and scrubs can strip the skin from its essential oils (sebum).  Although I’ve been taught to wash my face twice a day, what that actually does is strip my skin from its natural glow and lead to an unhealthy cycle of skin irritation and acne.

Crazy as it sounds, oil dissolves oil.  So by using the OCM , you’re getting rid of the dirty oil, while replenishing it with nourishing oil.  This will eventually clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.

HERE WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:

  • PREPARATION

Castor oil and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) are the most common combination of oils used in the OCM.  Castor oil is great for cleansing and dissolving, and it is also antibacterial, but it also can be drying, so depending on your skin type,  you’ll want to use more or less castor oil proportionally to the other oils.

OTHER OILS:

Jojoba (all skin types, but very desirable for acne-prone skin)

Sweet almond (all skin types, especially oily)

Grapeseed (all skin types, especially oily)

Avocado (dry and aging skin)

Sunflower Seed (all skin types)

Olive (all skin types)

OIL CLEANSING RATIO

Dry Skin: Blend 1 tablespoon castor oil with 3 tablespoons carrier oil.

Normal Skin: Blend 2 tablespoons castor oil with 2 tablespoons carrier oil.

Oily Skin: Blend 3 tablespoons castor oil with 1 tablespoon carrier oil.

Remember, that what may work for others, may not work for you.  So you can adjust the ratio to what suits you.  I have oily skin, so I use grapeseed oil as my carrier oil, and because I’ve noticed that the castor oil can be drying so I put a little on grapeseed oil into the mixture and/or apply olive oil as a moisturizer.

  • CLEANSE: You don’t have to remove your makeup, you can start with a dirty face.  After you’re finished mixing the oils, pour a quarter-size into your palm and begin to massage the oils into your face for about two minutes.
  • RINSE: Put a washcloth under hot water.  Adjust the heat to let it cool and it apply the warm washcloth to your face for 10-15 seconds.  Then begin to gently wipe the remaining oil from your face.

If your face is feeling tight and dry, you can apply a drop or two of the carrier oil to moisturize your skin.  Use the OCM at night and in the morning, simply just a damp washcloth to gently wipe your face.  I’ve only been using it for a couple of days, so it’s too early to give any results, but I will keep you posted.

MY HAIR CARE ROUTINE

Castor oil is beneficial with hair thinning/loss and dry scalp, so I like to massage it in my scalp and along my hair line.

I use coconut oil as an hot oil treatment and deep conditioner.  After I wash my hair, I mix it with my hair mask, sit under my heated cap for about an hour and rinse it out.  I’ve also seen reviews of people using it as a pre-poo.  Remember that coconut oil can cause hair to be stringy and greasy so you want to rinse it out.

Because it’s lightweight and odorless, I love to to use grapeseed oil as a moisturizer for my hair.  It helps add shine and hydration without looking stringy and feeling greasy.

HAVE YOU TRIED ANY OF THESE OILS IN YOUR HAIR CARE AND/OR SKINCARE ROUTINE?  HAVE YOU TRIED OTHER OILS?

Review :: Suave’s Keratin Infusion

My sisters have been raving bout how soft and smooth their hair is after using Suave’s new Keratin line.  If you’ve been following my blog, you know that I have VERY thick hair, and as a product junkie, I couldn’t resist the urge to try it out myself.  I went to Target and Walmart (they only had the serum at Walmart) to purchase Suave’s Keratin Infusion Smoothing Shampoo, Conditioner, Leave-In Conditioner and Serum.  I spent about $10 on all 4 products…WINNING!!!

Anyway, I shampooed my hair and combed the shampoo through and I did the same when I followed up with the conditioner.  I then applied a small amount of the leave-in conditioner and serum to my hair and flat-ironed it.

This is my new favorite!  I LOVE the way my hair feels and smells, just like how it is when I visit the salon.  It’s amazingly soft, smooth, bounces when I walk, smells great, and for $10 a HUGE bargain.

Suave Kertain Infusion is available at Target and Walmart. Try it and tell me how you like it.

Mad About Co-Washing

I have a confession to make….after four long months of trying to transition to natural hair, I’m back on the creamy crack.  It’s been a little over two weeks and I actually have to say, I have no regrets about going back.  I have A LOT of hair and trying to maintain it while it’s doing two completely different things (one part straight and the other kinky) was becoming overwhelming for me.  I think next time if and when I decide to go natural, I’ll just do the “big chop”, but that definitely won’t be anytime soon.

Usually when my hair is relaxed, I notice a feeling of dryness and of course, the frigid weather of winter, doesn’t help.  So this past weekend, I used a method called co-washing to increase the moisture level in my hair.  Co-washing is using conditioner, instead of shampoo to wash your.

I washed my hair with Ojon’s Damage Reverse Restorative Conditioner (read: Ojon’s :: Best of Damage Reserve Kit Review).  I then followed up with Shea Moisture’s Organic Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque.  I let the masque sit for about 30m minutes then rinsed it out.  After blowing it dry, I applied a heat protective spray and flat ironed it.

My hair feels amazingly smooth, soft and full of body, just as it would had I gone to the salon.  So with that said, I’m going to add co-washing to my hair routine at least twice a month.  Another thing I’m changing in my routine is pinning up my hair at night instead of wrapping it.  I know I said I would stop wrapping it (read: It’s A Wrap), but somehow I got back into that bad habit.  Hopefully, I’ll stick to pinning.

Relax Don’t be Tryna Perm Us Up, We Already Straight

I’m four months post relaxer and I’m trying to be patient as my hair transitions without cutting it off or going back to the creamy crack.   I took the advice of Celebrity Stylist, Nadia Vassell (Interview with Celebrity Hairstylist Nadia Vassell) and tried out Mizani’s Thermasmooth Shampoo, Conditioner, Thermasmooth system, the SmoothGuard and the ShineExtend.  My hair didn’t feel as hydrated as I had expected, but it felt extremely soft. Pair those products up with oil (coconut, argan, Moroccan, etc.), a good flat iron and Design Essential’s Sleek Edge Control and you’ll be straight!

Interview with Celebrity Hairstylist Nadia Vassell

Happy New Year Beauties! I hope your new year has been off to a wonderful start. With the new year comes new changes for many of us, and most of the changes have to do with self improvement.  So let’s make this a better year, for a better you.

To kick off the new year, I had the great opportunity to interview former model turned, celebrity hairstylist, Nadia Vassell.  Nadia has worked with many celebrities of the likes of Rihanna, Chrisette Michelle, Tika Sumpter and Ashanti and her work has been featured in many major publications such as, Essence, XXL, Smooth and Uptown Magazine.

I receive a ton of questions regarding hair care and trends, so it was great to get an expert’s response.  Take a look:

We’re about to kick off the New Year in less than a week. What are some hair trends that we should look forward to in the New Year?

We have seen everyone with the knots, braids and twist. If you’re going to do a top-of-the-head bun, make it more effortless and playful. Have some hair accidentally hanging outaround the perimeter of the head. This is perfect for NYE.

I know a lot of women who have decided to go natural recently. What advice would you give to them as far as products, hairstyles and maintenance, as they transition from relaxed to natural hair?

Bouncy blow-outs, this is just very sexy and elegant hair. It moves. This is healthy hair.Face framing hi-lites go perfectly with this style. Transitioning from relaxed to natural is notso hard when you have the right tools. A great shampoo and conditioner can be your bestfriend. My favorite is Mizani Thermasmooth Shampoo and Conditioner. This is if you decide to wear your hair smooth and straight. Both shampoo and conditioner prepares the hair forthe smoothing process. Follow with step three of the Thermasmooth system, The SmoothGuard, it protects your hair for the flat ironing process. End with the last step, The ShineExtend, which is an anti-humidity spray.

If you are transitioning and you prefer something more free and playful (curls), tryMoroccan oil Curl Defining Cream. It defines and shapes your curl. If you have very curlylocks, try Moroccan oil Curl Control Mousse. It’s perfect for frizz control.

I also know a lot of clients who are transitioning but are just not ready to chop all thatrelaxed part off. So they come in for weaves, which gives versatility and you don’t have toworry about applying heat to your hair. You can have fun with your weaves, do whatevercolor, texture and length your heart desires.

I’ve been hearing so much buzz about keratin treatments and how it’s much healthier than relaxers. Are keratin treatments really better for your hair?
There definitely has been a lot of buzz in the industry about keratin treatments. It’s anamazing new technology which eliminates frizz, gives you smooth, manageable hair. However, the buzz about this new service has not been positive because of the possiblehealth risk associated with them. These treatments may use a combination of formalin, keratin and heat to straighten the hair. There may be risk of exposure to toxins.
I, however discovered an alternative to the keratin treatment. New shape control, you canhave smooth straight hair, curled or waves. The product contains no Formaldehyde, andhealth wise, it will not compromise both you and your stylist hair.

I often have to battle with the fizzes during humid and rainy weather. What products would you recommend that won’t dry my hair out?

The Moroccan oil Curl control mousse is great for controlling frizz and is weather safe.

What are your top 5 hair products that you can’t live without?

1. Bed Head, TIGI a hair stick for cool people. I use as a finishing product to achieve asmooth, defined look.

2. Dry Shampoo- TIGI Rockaholic dirty secret dry shampoo. My bangs gets oily after 2 daysof getting my hair shampooed, so to have my hair looking like I just left the salon, I use adry shampoo, which gives my hair the life it needs.

3. Leave-in Conditioner

4.Moroccan oil Luminous hairspray.

5.Mizani’s Puriphying Shampoo.

Review :: Ojon’s Best of Damage Reserve Kit

If I ever had a hair profile status, it would read the following:

“I’m a fiery redhead, living life on the wild side, who prefers to have a little fun with being a blonde, yet also finds time to relax every 3-4 months.”

Yes, I know, it’s a dangerous combination, the coloring and relaxing, but I’m a gambler.  Recently I’ve experienced some breakage, nothing too major, but still, I wanted to address the issue.  I visited my local ULTA and picked up Ojon’s Best of Damage Reserve Kit.  Now, I’ve never used Ojon products before, but I’ve heard plenty about the brand.  Recently, GAWJUS songstress, Melanie Fiona mentioned in an interview with Fashion Bomb TV that she uses Ojon products to nourish her lovely locks.  I thought I’d give it a try and for only $39 for the complete kit including: Damage Reverse Restorative Shampoo (8.5 oz), Damage Reverse Restorative Conditioner (8.5 oz) and the Damage Reverse Restorative Hair Treatment (1.7 oz) it was a sweet bargain.

For those who aren’t familiar with the brand, here’s a little background info:  It’s a natural and organic line of naturally derived ingredients from the tropical rain forest in Central America.  Ojon’s secret to beautiful hair, is a rich palm nut oil extracted from the tropical tree. This unique tree grows only in the rain forest of the Mosquitia region of Central America. Ojon instantly hydrates and improves the condition of damaged, color-treated or processed hair without weighing it down. Fortifying, rebuilding and nourishing, it leaves hair extraordinarily shiny, silky and manageable. Ideal for dry, dull, damaged, natural or chemically-treated hair.

Formulated WITHOUT:
Parabens
Synthetic Fragrance
Synthetic Dye
Formaldehyde Donor
Phthalates
Triclosan
DEA,
PABA
Paraffin
Petrolatum/Mineral oil

According to the kit, the treatments which are fortified with pure Ojon oil, are suppose to instantly mend and strengthen my hair against breakage. So, as the kit instructed, I applied the Damage Reverse Restorative Hair Treatment to my scalp, massage it in and combed it through and let sit for 20 minutes. Next, I shampooed with the Damage Reverse Restorative Shampoo and followed up with the Damage Reverse Restorative Conditioner.

So here are the results…

I must admit that after I shampooed my hair, it didn’t feel as silky as it does when I use Shea Moisture’s Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo, but it felt very soft and pumped up the volume in my hair and added a lot of body to it.  When I walk, my hair just flows and bounces and I LOVE that!

Two thumbs up!

Ojon products are available at Sephora, ULTA and at Ojon.com.

Beauty Junkies Stay Organized

As you all should know, I am a beauty product/tool junkie!  Seriously, I have products everywhere!   In my bathroom, I have a cabinet filled with beauty tools (flat iron, curling irons, blow dryers, combs, clips, etc.) and products (shampoos, conditioners, styling products), and I also have a cart holding my everyday stuff (more shampoos, conditioners, styling products and makeup).  I have a big case of makeup, that I keep in my living room, and in my closet I have a self for more things that I don’t use as much.  So, as you can see, organization is essential for me.

I came across article in the latest issue of InStyle Magazine “Vanity Sanity” on how to keep your beauty essentials organized, so I thought I would share some ideas with you.

1. Containers – Use containers or jars to hold your cotton balls, q-tips, and/or sponges.  The colorful stackable containers in photo 1 are from Zak Designs.  I purchased inexpensive glass jars from Ikea.

2.  Wall Mount or ShelvesThe Vitra Uten Silo Wall Organizer is the perfect organizer for your beauty products and tools. It can hold a lot of items, without taking up much space, but it’s pretty pricey…$425, to be exact. An alternative would be to purchase inexpensive shelves and mount them on your wall.

3.  Labels - Keep your products organized by labeling them by the date of purchase. This helps you remember what products to trash when they expire.  These label package from Beauty Alert come with 20 labels in four categories:  3, 6, 12 & 18+.

4.  Luxury Deluxe Wood Cosmetics Box w/Mirror by Lori GreinerAvoid the cosmetics crush with this deluxe wood makeup box with built-in mirror. Spacious and separated into four different levels with swing-out doors and magnetic closures, it offers ample room for 30 lipsticks and numerous other cosmetics, like blushes, shadows, pencils, mascara, foundations, nail polishes, and more. From Lori Greiner.  Available at www.QVC.com for only $69.12

5.  Brush Holder - Keep your brushes organized, simply by using a glass, metal or plastic container or cup.

6.  Cosmetic Vanity Organizer - This organizer is perfect for your everyday essentials.  Available at www.touchofclass.com

Moment of Clarity Using African Black Soap

I had been hearing about the wonders of African black soap for while — how it works miracles on oily/acne prone skin and after months of procrastinating, thanks to a street vendor in my neighborhood, I was finally able to try it.  I purchased a bar of DuDu Osun’s African Black Soap for $5.

I started using it on Monday and immediately I could see the benefits.  When using my regular cleanser, I would either have to wipe my face first or use a toner afterwards to remove my makeup, but with the black soap, it removes all the product from my face, and has it feeling fresh and clean.  Also, usually around this time, I start to notice a few break outs or two, but since I’ve been using the black soap, I haven’t noticed any acne.  Finally,  I’ve noticed that it has helped brighten my skin, giving me a natural glow!

Two things worth mentioning is that it be a little messy, I would suggest storing it in one of those plastic soap containers.  Also, it has a strong fragrance — smells like cologne if you ask me, which can be good or bad, depending on the individual.

Here are some added benefits of using black soap (via benefitofnet.com):

1.Helps to remove scars caused by acne.
Since acne is not caused by dirt, but due to the release of excessive oils within the skin, the soap cannot remove acne. But use of African black soap helps to remove scars cause due to acne.

2.Helps to remove skin irritations.
Use of black soap helps to remove skin irritations like rashes.

3.Suitable for all skin types.
Black soap can be used for the treatment of problems on all types of skin including the dry and rough, oily and moderate skins.

4.Beneficial for skin diseases.
Black soap is very beneficial for reducing the discomforts that are associated with skin diseases like psoriasis and eczema

5.Helps in removing make-up.
Black soap not only cures skin problems but can also be used as a perfect cleanser for removing make up. It removes every bit of chemicals that can spoil the skin and help to make it clean and fresh.

6.Delays ageing on the skin.
Regular use of black soap helps to remove facial lines that are mostly early signs of ageing. Thus black soap can be used to delay ageing of skin.

7.Benefits to oily skin.
Regular use of black soap helps to remove extra oils form the skin. It is thus useful in preventing the formation of pimples and other problems associated with oily skin.

8.Benefits to the hair.
Black soap can be used for cleaning of hair. After cleaning use your regular conditioner for shiny lustrous beautiful hair.

Where to purchase black soap:

DuDu Osun’s Black Soap can be purchased online through Amazon or Afrikan Republic

Shea Moisture’s Organic African Black Soap Facial Regime is available at Target and Walgreen’s

If I missed a brand, please feel free to add it by responding.  Also, if you have tried black soap, let me know how its worked for you.

Day 1 – Homemade Protein Treatment

A few weeks ago, I was skimming through Instyle Magazine’s Hair Edition  and stopped on the “Beauty MacGyver” article. In it, several celebrity hairstylist recommended products that you could find at home to fix bad hair days.  Well-known hairstylist Ted Gibson recommended clear gelatin as a protein treatment.  Gelatin contains high levels of protein that helps strengthen the hair.  I decided to test it out.

I pre-shampooed with a protein treatment. I dissolved Knox Gelatine ($2 at your local grocery store) in hot water.  Let it cool off and applied it to my hair and left it in for about 25 minutes. *Warning* This can get very messy

- Next, I rinsed the gelatin out and shampooed with my Shea Moisture Organic Raw Shea Butter shampoo
- I deep conditioned with Shea Moisture’s Organic Raw Shea Butter’s Moisture Retention Deep Treatment Masque.  I kept the conditioner in over night.
- I then applied Nexxus Humectress Luxe Ultimate Moisturizing Leave-In Spray
- Blew my hair dry; applied Kemi oil
- Flat ironed and applied a small amount of coconut oil to each section.
- Trimmed
- Finally pin-curled and covered with a silk scarf.

I’m happy with the results. It’s very soft, full of body and hydrated.  When I trimmed my hair, I noticed that my right side (the side I wrap first) was more damaged than the left side, so I will be sticking with pin-curling it at night, instead of wrapping it and I will also try to cut back on heat.

I’ll stick with getting it washed every week, and a deep condition every two weeks and I’ll add the protein treatments once a month.
