Which Body Shape Are You? Sunglasses, Fragrance Bottle, Heart Pendant, Cocktail Ring or Lipstick

Fashion editor and style expert, Jacqui Stafford has put a new twist on body shapes, in her new book, The Wow Factor: Insider Style Secrets for Every Body and Every Budget.  Rather than be compared to an apple or pear, Stafford wants women to recognize shapes as something fun and positive.

The Sunglasses (Hourglass): Balanced curves (ie: Sofia Vergara & Kim Kardashian)

  • Bust and hips nearly the same size
  • Well defined waist – 9″ or more smaller than bust
  • Full Bust
  • Shapely Legs

The Fragrance Bottle (Pear):  Smaller on top and bigger on the bottom (ie: Beyonce & Jennifer Lopez)

  • Wider hips and thighs
  • Narrower shoulders
  • Wider bottom
  • Smaller bust

Lipstick (Banana or Rectangle) : Very little curves (ie: Gwyneth Paltrow & Kate Moss)

  • Undefined Waist
  • Narrower Hips
  • Small Bust

Heart Pendant (Downward Triangle):  Bigger up top and smaller on the bottle (ie: Angelina Jolie & Queen Latifah)

  • Larger Bust
  • Broader Shoulders
  • Narrower Hips
  • Less Defined Waist

Cocktail Ring (Round):  Silhouette is round

  • Tend to gain weight in your middle section
  • Have a higher waist
  • Bust, waist and hips are very close in measurements

What do you think of the new shape names?  Which new shape are you?

84th Annual Academy Awards Best Dressed

Sacha Baron Cohen’s stunt on the red carpet almost distracted the glamorous tone during the 84th Annual Academy Award’s pre-show, yet with the following fashionably fierce ladies on the red carpet, that would have been nearly impossible.

I was watching the red carpet with my 4 year-old nephew, so I’m sure you can imagine how hard it was for me to focus, especially when he’s throwing his apple juice on me.  I still got the chance to catch a few of my favs.

So without further adieu, the awards for Best Dress goes to….

Angelina Jolie wurked the thigh-high slit, in the dark velvet Versace gown.  Viola Davis looked radiant in a green Vera Wang gown and rocking her bronze natural hair. Jennifer Lopez showed off all of her assets in a cream Zuhair Murad  gown and last, but certainly not least, Michelle Williams looked very feminine in a strapless bright orange Louis Vuitton gown.

So tell me, who were you favorites?  Who are you least favorites?

Michelle Obama in Barbara Tfank at the State of the Union

First Lady, Michelle Obama looked absolutely stunning in a sapphire blue dress, by designer Barbara Tfank for the State of the Union address and as expected, the First Lady’s hair and makeup was flawless and chic as well.

If you can remember, during the Obama’s visit to Buckingham Palace last May, Mrs. Obama rocked a floral print dress from Tfank’s resort collection and in 2010, she donned an emerald green cocktail dress by the designer to an award ceremony.

Tfank begun her career as a costume designer and launched her clothing line at Barneys New York in 2001, forging a new modern opulence with a line of beautiful brocade cocktail coats and colorful, classically-shaped dresses in extraordinary textiles.

I had the privilege of attending beauty and style afficando, Mikki Taylor’s book signing for her new book, “Commander in Chic:  Every Woman’s Guide to Managing Her Style Like a First Lady” at Barnes & Noble in Washington, DC.

Fast Forward :: Seafoam Green Color Trend for Spring 2012

Winter has just started, but as you know, the world of beauty and fashion is forever evolving.  So as you prepared for the New Year, here’s an upcoming color trend to get ready for in Spring 2012.

Ripped straight from the runway, from Oscar de la Renta to Vera Wang,  seafoam green has been deemed the color for 2012, and not just in apparel or shoes, but, also in makeup.  Seafoam green is a beautiful, cool and refreshing color that can liven up just about anything. Take a look for yourself:

1. OPI in “Mermaid Tears”

2. China Gaze in “Refresh Mint”

3. Julep in “Miranda”

4. Essie in “Mint Candy Apple”

5. MAC Cosmetics in “Mischievous Mint”

1. Nars “Cleo Duo”

2. NYX “Seafoam”

3. MAC Cosmetics “Aquavert”

I tried the seafoam trend with Tarte’s Spring Greening Reusable Straw Palette.  I mixed the teal and golden lime colors and here’s what I got:

This color makes me so anxious for Spring 2012!  What do you think of seafoam green?  Would you rock it?

How Melissa Got Her Closet Back

Last Friday, I did a post on organizing beauty products and tools (“Beauty Junkies Stay Organized“) as inspired by InStyle Magazine.  Interesting enough, over the weekend I got caught up on blog reading and came across a great post on La Dolce Vita titled “Beautifully Organized: Hanging Earrings“.  The title is pretty much self-explanatory.  The post featured decorative and stylish ways to display and organize earrings.

The post not only inspired me to organize my jewelry collection, but also, my entire closet.  By the time I was finished sorting through clothes, earrings, necklaces, purses and shoes I had 6 big bags of stuff to donate to my local thrift store.

Besides throwing out old clothes and accessories, this is how I got my closet back:

(1) I used a shoe rack and hung it on one of my closet doors and placed the shoes that I wear the most on the rack.

(2) I used a pants hanger to hang all of my belts and ties.

(3)  I picked up a jewelry organizer from Marshall’s for $14.  I absolutely LOVE this organizer, because it doesn’t take up much space, I can simply hang it up in my closet, also each jewelry piece has it’s own compartment so they don’t get tangled AND it’s double sided.

(4) Besides the shoe rack hanging on my closet door, I have three other shoe organizers that hang from the closet poles.  These come in handy for my larger shoes and other accessories that I want out of the way.

Well, enough about my closet.  Hopefully this post has inspired you to tidy up your closet as well.  If so, I’d love to hear your ideas on how you keep it organized.

2011 Emmys Best Dressed :: Ladies in Red

I was glued to football all day yesterday, so  unfortunately, I missed the 2011 Emmys, but I did catch the recaps from the many media outlets that were covering it.

Evidently, red was THE color last night.  There were so many beauties rocking different shades of the bold and striking hue.  Many of which were my favorites for the evening

Check out my Best Dressed List:

The beautiful and curvaceous Sofia Vergara in a long coral Vera Wang gown with one shouldered crepe style, chiffon draping and tumbled tulle.

‘Vampire Dairies’ star, Nina Dobrev, looked stunning in a mermaid style, strapless red Donna Karan dress.

Another ‘Modern Family’ star, Sarah Hyland, looked sophisticated and all grown up in a Christian Siriano pleated peach gown, clinched at the waist with a crystal belt.

‘Friday Night Lights’ actress Connie Britton, in a strapless bow detailing Maria Lucia Hohan dress.

Finally, Dexter’s star, Jennifer Carpenter. She wasn’t rocking the popular color of the night, but her Tony Ward haute couture gown, with hand sewn embellishments and split certainty turned heads.

Who were your favorites?? Who needed to rethink their fashion choice??

Keeping Up With The Joneses :: Fall 2011 Beauty Trends

Fall doesn’t officially start until the 23rd, but judging from this upcoming weekend’s weather report, it’s pretty much already here. So time to pull out the layers and switch up the trends…and in case you aren’t familiar with the Fall 2011 beauty trends, here they are, fresh off the runway:

Red Lips  – Nothing is more daring and liberating than a woman in red…lipstick that is.in different shades variations of wine red, fire engine red, red velvet to neon red  to matte or shiny .

Remember: Blue based for fair skin and orange based or deep reds for dark complexions

Spider/Spiky Lashes – Clothes shouldn’t be the only thing you’re layering on this Fall…how about mascara?  Long, thick and voluminous lashes are  in this season, so don’t forget to pile on the mascara on both upper and lower lashes and don’t be afraid to try falsies.

Remember:  It’s all about the layers. Apply one coat of mascara to lower lash then top lash. Let dry and repeat the steps.

Smoky Metallic Eyes - Silver, gold and bronze, oh my! It never hurts to add a little sparkle to your palette.

Remember:  If you have dark skin, avoid silver and instead use golden or bronze colors.

Dramatic Eyeliner - Time the bring on the drama! For all my Drama Queens or Kings, if you really want to make a statement, try going bold with black eyeliner.

Flushed Cheeks – A simple way too add a little glow to your complexion is using pink blush.

Remember:  Cream blush is great for normal skin, but for oily or dry skin, stick with the powder.

So what look will you be trying this Fall?

All Hail the Queens :: The Originators of Celeb Concert Looks

Yesterday, I was looking at photos on InStyle.com of the Hottest Celebrity Summer Looks . It featured all the hottest female performers such as, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna rocking provocative and eccentric looks from sequins dresses, studded bodysuits to colorful wigs and dramatic makeup.   All this made me think of the ladies who rocked crowds before them, who dawned the same unconventional, yet sexy attire.

Meet the innovators:

Beyonce and Lady Gaga might have brought the bustier/leotard back in style, but remember, it was the iconic Madonna in the 80s/90s (Photo 4) who originated the cone bustier.
Before there was Lady Gaga in the famous Meat Dress or egg costume, there was Patti Labelle and The Bluebelles in the 1970s (Photo 2) in their outlandish space age outfits.
Newcomers like Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry may have popularized colorful wigs, but it’s Cher (Photo 3) who is the true wig aficionado.
And finally, let’s not forget, it was the Queen of Rock and Roll, Tina Turner (Photo1), who shook her tail feather in mini sequin dresses, years before King Beyonce did.

As the British would say “Long Live the Queen[s]!”
