$50 Drugstore Beauty Binge :: My Lastest Drugstore Beauty Products

Although I am a fan of  many high end cosmetic products, I’m no snob, there still a lot of drugstore products that can do the trick, sometimes, even better.  I’ve been on the quest for a new foundation and concealer, but didn’t want to send an arm and leg, so I did some research on reviews of drugstore products and headed to my local drugstore, CVS.   I went with the intent of only buying a new concealer and foundation, but of course ended up leaving with more.

Here’s what I picked up:

Neutrogena’s Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser ($7.99) – I have been trying out the oil cleansing method for about a month now and decided I needed a change.  I’ve tried this cleanser before and loved the way my skin felt, so I decided to purchase it.  No harsh chemical sulfates, parabens, petrochemicals, dyes, phthalates.  So it’s gentle, and with the salicylic acid, it’s very effective for someone like myself who suffers from mild acne.

Monistat’s Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel – I know this may sound a bit odd, but it’s actually a great makeup primer (check out my review from 3 years ago).  It contains dimethicone, which is the primary ingredient in high-end primers and it was only $8! It spreads like butter and has a silky finish.

Maybelline’s Fit Me Concealer ($6.99) – I researched reviews on a drugstore undereye concealer and saw a lot of good reviews on this product.  I’ve only used it for a day, but I can say that it went on smoothly and evenly and provided good coverage.  I wanted a highlight effect so the shade I purchased was “Medium 25″, which is a few shades lighter than my complexion.

Revlon’s Colorstay Foundation for Normal/Oily Skin ($13.49) – I some great reviews on this foundation as far as finish, coverage and length in wear.  I tried it this morning, it was an easy application, lightweight but great coverage.  They said it stays for 24 hours, I won’t be wearing it that long, but hopefully it does a good 9 hours.  One thing I will mention is that it has a matte finish, so if you experience dryness, you might want to mix a little with your moisturizer.

Aveeno’s Active Naturals Ultra-Calming Makeup Removing Wipes ($7.99) – I LOVE these wipes! No dryness, no icky residue and removes of my makeup.

I used all of these products last night and this morning.  Take a look:

Real Friends Don’t Let Friends Leave Out Busted…or Do They?

Looking at pictures of Foxy Brown performing with Nicki Minaj at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC earlier this week, I was left with a bunch of questions.  First, let me begin by saying, I was happy to see Foxy and Nicki come together without all the usual drama, and yes, I am a fan of them both, especially Foxy.  I still remember seeing her for the first time in the “Ain’t No” video with Jay-Z and thinking how beautiful she was, and recording her songs on the radio, and listening to them over and over again, to memorize the lyrics…she was BAD!

But back to the questions….what did Foxy have on? Why? And most importantly, where were her friends? Now, this post purpose isn’t to bash Foxy Brown, because we’ve all had our moments, but, as my father has always told me, your real friends tell you the truth.  Where were her friends to tell her that she was stuck in a time warp?

Ultimately, this all got me to thinking about the bigger question, “would you tell a friend if she looked bad”?    Is it a friend’s place to tell you that your hairstyle or your outfit is unflattering?  And, how would you feel, being told that your lipstick shade is horrid?

My mom and sister will be the FIRST to tell me that my foundation is too orange or that they dislike my new hairstyle, and as much as I hate to hear it, I do value their opinions. Maybe, it might be different coming from someone else.

How do you feel? Are you honest with your friends about their looks, or do you sugarcoat your opinions in the name of friendship?

Effortless Poolside Glam :: Pool Makeup Tips

Hey Beauties!  I know it’s been a minute since my last post, I’ve been a little wrapped up with another project that I’m working on (can’t wait to tell you about it!) and I just got back from vacation in Las Vegas, so I’m just settling in. Anyway, while in Vegas, I attended one of their much talked about day parties, and was inspired to do a post on poolside makeup tips.

Whether you’re poolside in DC, Miami, Vegas, LA or even in your own back yard, simplicity and waterproof makeup are key to giving good face by the water.

1.  Sunscreen mixed with Foundation – For flawless skin with sun protection, a tinted moisterizer with SPF is your BFF.  My fav is Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB Cream SPF

2.  Waterproof Mascara - Remember simplicity and waterproof is key, so skip the eye shadow and eyeliner and just go straight to to the mascara.

3.  Bronzer – Get a sunkissed glow without all the shimmer, for a flawless finish.

4.  Pressed Powder – Keep your t-zone in check and shine proof with a compact pressed powder

5. Lip Color – Avoid the greasy or glossy look and stick with a matte or stained color that won’t easily rub off.  You all know coral is my color for summer.  Try a nice bright color to liven things up.

6.  Nail Polish – A quick and easy way to accessorize your look, is by dressing up your fingers and toes with a nail polish.  Try summer trends like seafoam, burnt topaz and or bright tangerine.

7.  Accessorize – Whether it’s, sunglasses, a hat, earrings or bracelets, adding accessories can turn a simple look, into something fun.  I for one, LOVE wearing hats.

Do you wear makeup to the pool/beach?? What makeup item(s) and/or accessories are a must-have for the beach/pool?

Summer Beauty Essentials :: My Top Six Favs

It’s officially summer time and around this time, I always receive a lot of questions asking about the perfect makeup for the hot and humid season of summer.  I know a lot of you, like myself, don’t want to be bothered by makeup, when it’s hot and sticky outside, yet, we still want to look our best.  For this season, I strongly believe, less is more.

Here’s my list of summer beauty essentials:

1. REMEMBER, protecting yourself from the sun is vital for healthy skin.  Neutrogena’s  Wet Skin Sunblock Spray is perfect for the pool, beach and humid climates.  No white residue, sweat proof, water proof, oil-free and PABA-free.  Just spray it on, rub it in and go!

2.  Waterproof mascara!! Never go to the beach and/or pool without it!

3.  Who wants to feel caked up when its 80+ degrees out?? If you’re looking for good coverage, but want something light weight, try Smashbox’s Cream Ready BB Cream SPF 35.  It’s a 5 in 1 (concealer, primer, foundation, tinted moisturizer & sunscreen), that provides good coverage, and yet doesn’t look or feel heavy.

4.  Natural looking waves are in around this time of year and if you read my previous post, than you know Shea Moisture’s Organic Coconut & Hisbiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo and Organic Coconut & Hisbiscus Curl & Hold Smoothie are great products to use for the beach wave look.

5.  Get the sun-kiss look and keep it simple with bronzer. A little bronzer can go a long way!

6.  While keeping it simple, you can always turn things up a notch with a vibrant lip color.  Coral, is color of choice for summer.  With coral, you can keep it chill with a pink tone or liven things up with an orange shade….there’s a hue for every woman.

If you a product or a list  of beauty essentials for the summer, I’d love to hear about them.  Tell us about them!

Review :: Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35

I’ve been hearing all the fuss about bb creams and decided to try it out to see if it really lives up to its hype.  BB cream, which stands for Blemish Balm Cream, was initially used by dermatologist whose patients underwent laser surgery.  The cream helped to protect, soothe and regenerate their highly sensitive skin, while providing great coverage for post-laser scars and redness.  Shortly after, Korean cosmetics companies caught onto the popular cream and it eventually made it’s way into Western markets.

The benefits of bb creams include:

  • Produces a  natural, “no makeup” look
  • Provides good coverage like foundation, but not as thick, and it doesn’t clog the pores
  • Works pretty much like a tinted moisturizer
  • Conceals all types of pigmentation, discoloration, acne and other blemishes
  • Has healing properties that soften, smooth and refine skin
  • Encourages skin regeneration to create and maintain youthful skin
  • Contains UV Protection for healthy skin (SPF levels differ for each brand/product)
  • Anti-wrinkle and skin-lightening benefits (available for some variants)

Brands from Garnier to Smashbox are in on the bb cream craze and depending on the brand you choose, you could have an all in one product (moisturizer, concealer, foundation and sunblock).

I tried Smashbox’s Cream Ready BB Cream SPF 35 in medium (1 oz. $39).

Here are the claims:

What it is:
A five-in-one set secret for achieving flawless skin on camera and beyond.

What it does:
This multitasking tinted cream formula with SPF 35 moisturizes, primes, perfects, controls oil, and protects for flawless skin on set and beyond. Formulated with emollients and optical pearl pigments, this BB Cream gives skin a glowing, ethereal look and provides a hydrating veil for the complexion to maintain moisture on the surface of the skin. With its ultra-smoothing finish, it instantly re-texturizes to create a smooth canvas. Especially when worn under foundation, it enhances the wear of makeup for up to eight hours. Ideal even for oily complexions, this expert formula with UVA/UVB protection helps inhibit oil to prevent the complexion from getting shiny throughout the day without the typical chalky matte finish.

What else you need to know:
Smashbox first heard about Asia’s hottest beauty craze in the photo studios from makeup artists, who had just been on location, and found it was the best tool to perfect skin on set without all the typical layers of product such as moisturizer, primer, concealer, and foundation, which can irritate sensitive skin. This unique formula creates “progressive” coverage, which means you can achieve different levels of coverage depending on how you wear it. Appropriate for all skin types, this product is free of fragrance, dermatologist tested, and non-acnegenic.

So here’s my outtake:

PROS:

Long lasting – Usually by the end of the day my makeup basically disappears, but as the the claim stated “enhances the wear of makeup for up to eight hours”. It actually lasted longer.

Non-Oily – Usually I would have to blot my face several times, throughout the day, but once or twice is

Lightweight – You don’t get that caked-up/heavy look or feeling

Goes on smooth – Easy application because it spreads like butter

Good coverage – You could actually wear this without foundation, depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for

Sunscreen

CONS:

Pricey – At $39 it is a little costly compared to Garnier’s $12 bb cream

Color selection – With only 5 color selections, they don’t offer that many color options.

One more thing I want to add, although it does provide good coverage, if you have acne-prone skin, like myself, you may still need to use a concealer and/or a little foundation to help conceal your acne.  Overall, I’d have to say, it’s worth the $39.

Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB Cream SPF 35 is available online at SmashboxSephora and ULTA.

Beauty Junkies Stay Organized

As you all should know, I am a beauty product/tool junkie!  Seriously, I have products everywhere!   In my bathroom, I have a cabinet filled with beauty tools (flat iron, curling irons, blow dryers, combs, clips, etc.) and products (shampoos, conditioners, styling products), and I also have a cart holding my everyday stuff (more shampoos, conditioners, styling products and makeup).  I have a big case of makeup, that I keep in my living room, and in my closet I have a self for more things that I don’t use as much.  So, as you can see, organization is essential for me.

I came across article in the latest issue of InStyle Magazine “Vanity Sanity” on how to keep your beauty essentials organized, so I thought I would share some ideas with you.

1. Containers – Use containers or jars to hold your cotton balls, q-tips, and/or sponges.  The colorful stackable containers in photo 1 are from Zak Designs.  I purchased inexpensive glass jars from Ikea.

2.  Wall Mount or ShelvesThe Vitra Uten Silo Wall Organizer is the perfect organizer for your beauty products and tools. It can hold a lot of items, without taking up much space, but it’s pretty pricey…$425, to be exact. An alternative would be to purchase inexpensive shelves and mount them on your wall.

3.  Labels - Keep your products organized by labeling them by the date of purchase. This helps you remember what products to trash when they expire.  These label package from Beauty Alert come with 20 labels in four categories:  3, 6, 12 & 18+.

4.  Luxury Deluxe Wood Cosmetics Box w/Mirror by Lori GreinerAvoid the cosmetics crush with this deluxe wood makeup box with built-in mirror. Spacious and separated into four different levels with swing-out doors and magnetic closures, it offers ample room for 30 lipsticks and numerous other cosmetics, like blushes, shadows, pencils, mascara, foundations, nail polishes, and more. From Lori Greiner.  Available at www.QVC.com for only $69.12

5.  Brush Holder - Keep your brushes organized, simply by using a glass, metal or plastic container or cup.

6.  Cosmetic Vanity Organizer - This organizer is perfect for your everyday essentials.  Available at www.touchofclass.com

All The Pregnant Ladies :: Pregnancy Makeup Tips from Bobbi Brown

I’m sure you’ve all heard the news that Beyonce and Jay-Z are expecting their first child.  She sort of announced it (I say sort of because she didn’t say anything, she just opened her blazer and showed her lovely baby bump and rubbed it) at the end of her performance at MTV’s Video Music Awards.

Look at her, just glowing! Congrats to Bey and Jay!

Anyway, since there seems to be something in the water, I thought it would be a great time to do a post on pregnancy makeup tips. I know, during those nine long months, you body doesn’t seem like its own.  With morning sickness, swollen ankles and all the only symptoms that come along with pregnancy, the last thing you’re probably thinking about is “giving good face”, but you can still keep it glam and simple while preggers.

Makeup extraordinaire, Bobbi Brown suggest:

What about those days when you don’t have time for a full make up or you really just need a lift? “Blush is the best way to give yourself a boost,” says Brown. Her signature technique is to apply a bronzer or skin tone blush across the whole cheek as a base and then a splash of pink right on the ‘apple’ for a natural, I-just-finished-exercising, look. Pregnant women can also give themselves a beauty and mood boost by spritzing on a clean, fresh scent. Choose something light and pretty, says Brown, since your sense of smell is heightened during pregnancy.

“I like to recommend that pregnant women keep their beauty routine simple and easy,” says Brown. Her list of essentials includes a concealer for blotchy or uneven areas and dark undereye circles, yellow-toned foundation (which Brown swears is best for all skin types), a pink blush, and your favourite lip colour. For best results, Brown recommends first putting on concealer (one shade lighter than your foundation) just where it seems necessary, because that may be all you need. Then apply foundation, but only on the areas without concealer. Doubling up just cancels out the effect of the concealer, she says.

She says: “For many women, pregnancy is a time when their bodies do not feel like their own. Make-up can be used as a tool to feel pretty and in control. In fact, one of the biggest beauty mistakes pregnant women can make is opting out of make-up altogether.”

Instead, adjust your skincare regime for those pregnancy-related changes. “Add more moisture to combat dryness or switch to oil-free formulas if your skin is feeling greasy,” says Bobbi.

During pregnancy, dark often appear on your skin. “To cover hyper-pigmentation, apply a corrective concealer using a brush,” recommends Bobbi. “Apply foundation over your entire face, using a light touch to avoid wiping away the concealer. Use your fingers to press additional foundation into areas where needed, and then set it with powder.”

He Liked It So He Put A Ring On It :: Wedding Day Beauty Tips

One of my very closest friends is getting married this week and I have the wonderful privilege of doing his beautiful bride-to-be makeup for the big occasion…(nervous much lol). This has to be wedding season right now — I have four friends getting married over the next 3 months and of course, every bride wants to look her best on the “Big Day”.  I have been doing a lot of research preparing for the wedding so I thought I’d share some helpful Wedding Beauty Tips:

1. Ensure your makeup staying power with primer and setting powder
2. Make sure your eyebrows are groomed & don’t wax them at the last minute
3. It almost goes without saying, waterproof, waterproof, waterproof. This out of all the days would be a great time to invest in waterproof mascara.
5. Keep shimmer to a minimal
6. Carry a touch-up kit with concealer, pressed powder, lipstick or gloss, lip liner, tissues, mints and a mini sewing kit (for emergency clothing fixes like a dropped hem or popped button).
7. Do a test run of your makeup
8. Make sure you have the right shade foundation & get a good view of your makeup.  Natural light is the best way to go. If possible, set up an application table near a window. If there’s no natural light available, use a superbright lamp — halogens work best

9. Hydrate!
10. To make lip color last longer, line and fill your lips with a lip pencil before applying your lipstick.

Team Carter :: Have a ♥, Fix a ♥

I usually cover topics related to the world of beauty and glamour, but today I wanted to post something that is near and dear to my heart.  This weekend, I will be participating in the 2nd Annual Congenital Heart Walk.  This walk means a lot to me, because in December 2010, my 8 month old nephew, Carter unexpectedly passed away from a congenital heart defect called coronary arteries anomalies.  1 in 100 babies are born with a congenital heart defect every year.  It is the leading cause of infant mortality.

By participating in this walk, I’m not only remembering Carter, but I  hope to raise awareness of this disease and also funds for vital research.   Funds raised support the Adult Congenital Heart Association (ACHA) and Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF) who are dedicated to improving the quality of life for those living with congenital heart defects (CHD).

This is my first time participating in a walk and I’m hearing it will be in the low 80′s on Sunday, so I’m definitely making sure I’m prepared — sunscreen, water bottle, comfortable sneaks and light t-shirt.

Beauty at the Beach :: Tips for Keeping Your Hair & Makeup Sexy, Yet Simple

The official mark of the start of summer vacation, Memorial Weekend, is right around the corner.  Almost time to hit the beaches and pool parties. Ready to strut your gorgeousness at the beach? Well, here are some helpful tips and ideas, to help you do just that!

Remember the overall rule is to keep it simple and effortless.

Protect your Skin – Sunscreen is a MUST! Overexposure to the sun’s invisible rays can cause skin damage.  Most people benefit from sunscreens with sun protection factor (SPF) numbers of 15 or more.  Before you apply your makeup, apply a a generous coat of sunscreen and wait 20 minutes to let it soak in.  If you need to reapply, try a powder sunblock, like Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral Powder SPF, which won’t disturb your makeup.

Don’t Cake Up – In humid, hot weather, creamy foundation won’t hold up for long.  If you must have full coverage, try mixing your foundation with your sunscreen for longer coverage.  Otherwise, skip the foundation and use concealer to cover blemishes with press powder.  Don’t forget the bronzer to enhance the look.

Waterproof It – Don’t let sweat or water fade you, you can still stay glam under water.  Try a waterproof eyeliner and mascara.  Don’t forget a lip stain to keep a little color on the lips.

Again, even with your hair, you want to keep it sexy, yet simple and what better look to rock at the beach, than waves.

For fine to medium texture hair that is straight to loosely wavy:

  • Shampoo and condition your hair before bed and towel dry.
  • Evenly distribute a conditioning mousse (with hold) in sections throughout your entire head, when finished comb through.
  • Scrunch your hair and get a good night sleep! You’ll wake up the next morning with bed head with texture and volume! From here you’ll only need 10-15 minutes to refine this look.
  • Begin at your nape, twisting and curling your hair around a medium size curling iron from the midshaft to the ends. Once you reach your crown twist and curl your hair from the roots to the ends. (Working on hair that is “dirty” helps your style to last longer).
  • Allow your hair to cool and then soften your waves by finger styling your hair with a greaseless lightweight shine serum.

For thick, curly or coarse hair:

  • Shampoo and condition as usual. Towel dry enough so your hair will dry by morning. I recommend applying a relaxing balm to your hair in sections and then combing through. This will help smooth your curls and tame any frizz. You should be fast asleep by now, dreaming of your loose waves!
  • In the morning, finish by beginning at your nape and twisting and curling your hair around a medium size curling iron. (From the midshaft to the ends). When you reach your crown twist and curl from the roots to the ends.
  • Allow your hair to cool.
  • Finish by loosening your curls to a soft summer wave by finger styling with a lightweight greaseless shine serum.
