Smashbox Studio Pop Eye Palette Review

This weekend, I purchased Smashbox’s Studio Pop Eye Palette.  With 16 of Smashbox’s bestselling Photo Op Eye Shadows and 4 eye luxe cream liners for only $39 I thought it was a bargain!

Check out my review:

I decided to play in the purples (Orchid, Amethyst and Royal) and do a smokey eye…

So what do you think of the colors?

Falling Slowly

It’s been two long months…I know, I’ve been a very bad blogger.  So much has been going on over the last couple of months (classes, exams, life, etc.), but I haven’t forgotten about you.  Trying to get things back on track….back to posting on a weekly basis.

We’re now into my favorite season of Fall, which means, lots of smokey eye, berry lips, dark colors and of course, football!  So much to cover this season.  So, if you have any questions, or want to see a product or technique discussed, feel free to leave a comment or e-mail me.

In the meantime, I’d like to know, what are you most looking forward to this season?

July 4th Pin Up Girl Inspired Look

Independence Day is this upcoming Monday, and I’m sure a lot of us will be celebrating with cook outs, parties and/or viewing the fireworks to show our patriotism.  I was really thinking hard about a look for the 4th of July…maybe something funky like red, white and blue on the eyes or blue smokey eye and red lips or even blue lips, but then I thought about it, nothing is more patriotic than the retro pinup girl look.

Pin up models like, Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable and Jane Russell and work from artists such as Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren and George Petty were ever present in the lockers of the G.I.’s during World War II.

It’s a very sexy, yet simple look.  Here’s how I achieved the look:

- Applied a warm taupe shadow on my eyelid.
- Brown eyeshadow in the crease.
- Black eyeliner was a staple during that time, so it’s a must for the look.  I applied a thick line gel/cream black eyeliner.
- White eyeliner on the waterline. Remember wearing white eyeliner helps open your eyes.
- Black eyeshadow along the lower lash line
-  I wanted the big flirty lashes so I applied faux lashes.
- I wanted rosey cheeks so I used Laura Mercier’s blush in Spiced Cider.
- Finally finished up with the classic pinup girl red lips. I used L’Oreal Infalliable Le Rouge in Refined Ruby.  This one of my favorite lipstick brands because it’s very hydrating, so it keeps your lips moist without drying them.

Hope you all have a safe wonderful 4th!

Can We Get Much Higher :: Spring 2011 Trend – High Buns

Remember the ballerina buns that we’re used to seeing at dance recitals? Well, it appears that the runway has made this infamous hairstyle a popular trend for the spring season. In shows from designers Oscar de la Renta to Zac Posen, models donned different variations from tightly structured to perfectly shape high buns.

This is a very simple, yet elegant look that you could wear for any occasion.  You can pair it up with big hoops or dangling earrings or for a more subtle look, simple studs and any makeup look from a sensual smokey eye to a luminous natural look could go.

To achieve this look, simply pull you hair tightly together. Twist it into a bun, and then secure it with an elastic band and/or hairpins. Gently tug the edges of the bun outward to make it appear fuller. Finally, apply a strong-hold hairspray to any stray hairs.

I can’t wait to try it myself!

Halloween Look :: So Toxic…Poison Ivy

Anyone who knows me, knows how much I LOVE Halloween.  I come from a family of uniquely creative women, so Halloween has always been a time for us to bring out our creativity in our costumes.
My mom created the Bride and Mermaid costumes for my sister and I – 1993
I must admit, for the past couple of years, I have purchased my costume online or from a Halloween store, but this year I wanted to bring the creativity back.  I wanted to go outside of the norms, like the witch, vampire, angel, etc., so somehow I decided to be Poison Ivy from the Batman Series.
Here’s a little background info about Poison Ivy, for those who don’t know:
Pamela Lillian Isley was a well-known and highly successful botanist. After learning she has a hyperactive immune system that causes her body reject any infection, poison, or outside contamination, she dons the guise of “Poison Ivy” and begins a career of crime. Those who spurn or commit acts that harm plant life or the environment become the object of the evil affections of Poison Ivy. She is evil yet can be incredibly seductive in luring men to do her bidding. Her crimes are often targeted toward wealthy men. She is known to use poison perfumes and lipstick as well as plant creatures of her own design.

Here’s what I did to achieve the look:
1.  I purchased a black bustier. Got some ivy from the thrift store and hot glued the ivy on the bustier. That process took about 3 hours.  I would recommend getting a green leotard/bustier/one-piece, that way if there are patches, it would blend it better.
2. I purchased my shoulder gloves from www.welovecolors.com.  Unfortunately the gloves weren’t the color I expected, they were more of a blueish-green than green.  I purchased a dark green dye from Micheal’s and dyed the gloves to get them a dark green color.
3.  Purchased opaque stockings from American Apparel in emerald.
4.  Poison Ivy’s trademark is her long flowing red hair.  I purchased this Pin Up Girl Wig in Red.  It was sold out almost everywhere, luckily I found it at www.candyapplecostumes.com and got it for $16.
5.  I purchased black boots from the thrift store and spray painted them green.
6.  Finally, for the make-up, I did a green smokey eye, rocked thick, long and flirty lashes and of course I couldn’t forget the signature green lips.  It was difficult finding green lipstick, so I used green cream eyeliner, green face crayon and a little gloss to achieve the look.
And here’s the end results:

Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” Video Inspired Green Smokey Eyes

Over the weekend I watched Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” video for the first time and I have to say that I absolutely LOVE IT!  Loved the pop art and vibrant colors and can’t forget Rihanna’s sensuality…she was actually dancing in this video so I was really impressed.

The video inspired me so I decided to have a little fun and rock a colorful and dramatic look, green smokey eye.

Here’s how  I got the look:

1. First I prepped my eyes with  Too Faced Eyeshadow Insurance Primer.
2. I used my Sephora Ultimate Blockbuster Kit for my shadows. I applied a light green to the inner color of my eyes.
3. I dusted a jewel-toned green to the middle of my lids and blended the light and jewel-toned colors.
4. I layered black shadow to the outer corner and brought it up into the crease and blended it. I wanted a extreme dramatic look so I blended it up to the brow bone.
5. I then applied black cream liner and smudge it.
6. I applied black liner to my water line and black shadow on the lower lash line midpoint to the outer corner. I then applied the jewel-tone green to the inner corner to midpoint.
7. I applied false lashes and applied mascara to the lower lash line.
8. I completed the look with a icy lipstick and clear lip gloss.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 Make-Up Favs

New York Fashion Week Fall 2010 has finally come to an end and as we remember the fabulous fashions that strutted down the runway we can’t forget about the fierce make-up that went along.

Here’s my favorite make-up looks of NY Fashion Week:

Diane von Furstenberg
- I’m a big fan of dramatic make-up and smokey eye, so this look does it for me. This look was inspired by a woman changing, evolving “like a butterfly”. Make-up artist, James Kaliardos applied black shadow cream to the eyelids and under the eyes. He then added blue and green powder on top, and finished the look by adding sparkle to the inner corners.

Vena Cava – The models cheeks were sunkissed with bronzer and a hint of violet. Bright orange-red lipstick were applied to the lips. I like the simplicity of the overall look, but I LOVE the and and color and boldness of the lips, which add pop.

Elie Tahari – This look was modeled after the copper colors in the collection. Faces were soft and velvety, with a dusting of blush on cheeks. Bronze and gold shadows were applied to eye lids, that reflected metallic tint from the collection. To balance the look a nude pink color was applied to the lips.

Betsey Johnson
– This make-up look was inspired by 1960s bombshell Brigitte Bardot which is why I love this look. Make-up artist, Sarah Lucero from Stila kept the face natural and layered black shadow on the eye lids and under the eye and lined the upper and lowed lids with black liner. She completed the look with a nude pink color on the lips.

Grammys 2010 Commentary

Normally I’m never able to made it half way through the Grammys, but this year I was really impressed. The performances were amazing. If they gave an award for Best Performance though, it would have to go to Pink…hands down! If you missed Pink’s amazing performance, check it out

Now to my 2010 Grammys Beauty Favs

One word, gorgeousness…did you expect anything less from B?

Not used to seeing Britney with Auburn hair, but I actually like this color on her. It makes her look more mature.

Brandy rocking smokey eyes looks fab. Think this is the best I’ve seen her.

Kelly had a soft looking going on – neutral eyes, rosey cheeks and nude lips.Don’t care too much for the wig, but she’s still a doll though!

Lady Gaga is always known to go over the top, so I didn’t know what to expect, but I actually really like this dramatic look very Joan Crawford.

Jlo still looking fierce at 40. Love it when she rocks smokey eyes

Flirty and fun, Rihanna with frosted eyes and big lashes

Fall 2009 Make-up Trends

Not sure if you’re ready or not, but with the chilly weather that has been occurring lately, the season of Fall is practically here and although I do dread the weather, I am highly anticipating the trends of Fall 09.

This season’s look is more of a “Good Girl Gone Bad” theme – red lips and dark eyes of 40s – vampire chic, with a touch of 80s glam.

Dark/Smokey Eyes – eyes loaded with black shadow and liner, often with glittery blue, brown, or gunmetal on the lids.

Red Lips

Dark Lips

Cat Eyes – Retro 1950’s Glam (think Brigitte Bardot & Sophia Loren)

Crazy Shadow – Inspired by the 80’s – strong reds, oranges and even glitter beyond the outer corner of the eyes

Defined Brows

My favorite look is the cat eye with red lips, but I’m anxious to try out the dark lips.
