NEW Beauty Tip Video On Using Dental Picks For Lashes

I LOVE a dramatic look, without  too much fuss, so I always apply mascara on both my upper and lower lashes.  Sometimes it can get a little messy, depending on the size of the mascara wand.  If it’s too big, chances are, the mascara will usually end up under my eye.  Some beauty experts suggest using a business card or credit card, when applying mascara to avoid that problem, but I’ve found a better solution using dental picks.

Check out the video below to see how it works:

Dentek Dental Picks have a bristled end that help with applying mascara, separating lashes and getting ride of clumps.  You can find these at your local drugstore, but I purchased a pack of 100 at the Dollar Store.

So what do you think?  Do you apply mascara on your lower lashes?  Would you use dental picks?

Sweet Thang :: NEW Flushed Cheeks Tutorial

As mentioned in our Keeping Up With The Joneses :: Fall 2011 Beauty Trends post,  flushed cheeks are a top trend for this fall season.  If you take a look at any of the NYFW footage/photos or flip through any of your favorite beauty/fashion magazines you’re sure to see this trend.

Not only does this look strengthen your cheek bones, but it also provides a very youthful, feminine and sun-kissed look with minimal effort.  Check out my NEW tutorial on how to achieve this look:

This look very sweet look.  Remember, for a subtle look, just use a pink, peach or coral blush and apply to the apples of your cheeks.  For a more dramatic look, apply bronzer in a c-shape in the crease of your cheeks OR you could do both.  To make the look even more feminine, pair it up with a peachy, pale pink or nude lipstick

Here are some blushes I recommend:  Lorac’s Blush/Bronzer Duo in Hot Flash, Stila’s Custom Color Blush, and Lorac’s Baked Matte Satin Blush in Exposed.

How to Get Through Irene :: Beauty Must-Haves to Weather the Storm

Hurricane Irene, has made her debut in the Bahamas, and is expected to move upward along the east coast over the next few days. It’s usually during these natural disasters where I get super creative. I mean, what else can you really do, when your cable and/or power is out.  Remember The Snowmaggedon Makeover, nearly two years ago? So with anticipating her arrival, I have begun making a list of all the essential things I will need.   Hopefully this list will help you as well to get over Irene.

Usually when it’s extremely windy out, my cable is the first to go. So, I’m prepared with DVDs.  Here’s a list of great makeover movies:

Clueless
The Breakfast Club
The Devil Wears Prada
Miss Congeniality
Never Been Kissed
The House Bunny
Date Movie
Batman Returns
Batman Forever

So, I know what you’re thinking, “but, what if the power goes out?”.  Now, would be a great time to run to your library or book store and get caught up on some reading.

Show Off Your Cheeks :: Highlighting & Contouring Part II

Looking for a fresh, radiant and youthful look for the upcoming spring season? How about giving your face a little lift? No, not with surgery, but with a little highlighting and contouring.  Highlighting & contouring makes your face look slimmer, gives you a beautiful and youthful glow and adds depth to your face.

Last month, we did a tutorial on contouring the nose and following up, we have a NEW tutorial on highlighting and contouring the cheekbones. Check it out:

Here are some tips for contouring & highlighting:

- For fair skin, use a silvery or pearly tinted highlighter.  For warmer and darker tones, use a golden or bronze shade.
- If you have oily skin, stick to powders and for dry to normal skin, use liquids or creams.

Try it out! I’d love her how it works for you.

Glitter Valentine’s Day Look :: LASplash Cosmetics

I decided to do another Valentine’s Day look. With this second look, I wanted to do something that was less dramatic and more feminine — Keywords: pink and glitter!  So here’s what I did:

To hold the eyeshadow and glitter, I applied LASplash Cosmetic’s  Eyeshadow/Sealer Base
I applied pink eyeshadow all over my lid.  I’m not sure the name of the eyeshadow, but it’s from my Sephora kit.

For the pink glitter, I applied LASplash Cosmetic’s Crystallized Glitter in Chic on my lid as well.

Next, I applied black eyeshadow to the outer corner of my lid and into my crease.

I then lined both my top and bottom lash lines with black eyeliner.

Applied Maybelline’s Falsies mascara and glued on fake lashes.

Brushed my cheeks with Bobbi Browns Pale Pink blush

I finished the color with hot pink lipstick.

Mascara, Eyelash Curlers & Comb….Oh My! :: Selecting the Right One

Mascara is one of the most essential makeup products you should have.  Wearing mascara is a quick and easy way to enhance your eyes, by lengthening, thickening, and/or darkening your eyelashes.  No beauty routine is complete without it.  Yet, with so many brands and types, finding the right mascara for you, can be a bit overwhelming.    Here are some tips to help the selection process easy for you:

  • First, you must consider the state of your eyelashes (i.e. are your lashes short or long; sparse). For long eyelashes, you may consider mascara which provides volume to your eyes, to make them thicker and denser.  For short lashes you should choose lengthening mascara.
  • Second, you want to choose a mascara color according to your hair color; brunettes should use black to bring out their eyes, but brown mascara will have a more natural effect on fair-haired women.
  • Next, decide whether you would prefer to use waterproof or water-soluble mascara. Water-soluble is easier to remove without eye makeup remover, thus minimizing the amount of rubbing around the eyes, which can lead to saggy skin. Waterproof mascara is a better choice for athletes, especially swimmers.
  • You should also consider the size of the mascara brush/wand. The longer your lashes are the thicker the brush required. On the other hand if you have short lashes then you should opt for short bristled brush. A smaller brush is also good for the hard to reach corners of the lashes and the lower lashes.
  • If your eyes are sensitive, use gentle mascara, it is best for contact lens wearers. There are also hypo allergic mascaras available in the market for women having sensitive eye.

Now to the fun part, applying mascara.  Check out the following tutorial in the “Better You” series for applying mascara and using eyelash curlers and comb.

To apply a thin application, use a tissue to take off extra mascara on the wand.

Remember, curling your lashes is absolutely essential.  It lifts and fans your lashes, making your eyes appear bigger.

Sometimes clumps are unavoidable.  Use a eyelash comb to get rid of them.

To avoid bacteria buildup, get a new mascara every two months.

Valentine’s Day Inspired Look :: Illamasqua Throb Collection

I wanted to do a Valentine’s Day look post, so I went surfing on the net for inspiration and came across the ad campaign for Illamasqua’s ‘Throb’ Collection for Valentine’s Day.
The artistry was amazing — I immediately fell in love and thought I would give it a shot.
From viewing the photo, it looks like the artist used a airbrush machine, unfortunately, I don’t have an airbrush machine, so I had to do everything from hand.
I found a heart stencil online, which I used to form the heart shape.  My heart isn’t as precise as the model’s, but, hey, this was my first time.

I had to make the inside the heart pale, so I used the lightest foundation I had, which was Mary Kay® Full-Coverage Foundation in Ivory
For a thick and heavy brow, I used MAC’s Brow Pen in Spiked

For the eyes, I spread an ivory color all over my lid, in the crease and under my brow bone.  I then applied MAC’s Brown Down in the crease. I lined my eyes with Maybelline’s Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black and above that I used Givenchy Magic Khol Eyeliner Pencil in #2 White.

I applied big and flirty lashes.

For the rouge cheeks, I used Laura Mercier’s Spiced Cider Blush

It doesn’t look exactly like the Illamasqua campaign ad, but still a lot of fun to do.

New Year…New Tutorial :: A Better You in 2011

It’s a New Year, are you ready to evolve into a better you in 2011? Well I’m here to help, at least from a beauty standpoint. My goal for the New Year is to help you realize your full potential – so enough making excuses about the kids, money, work or school; it’s time for YOU to make yourself a priority.
This year I will be doing a series of “A Better You” tutorials each focusing on areas of improving and enhancing your look throughout the year.  Each tutorial will be short and simple, so no worrying about a lengthy and complicated video cutting into your already busy schedule. I want to make this as easy as possible for you.
First up of the “A Better You” series is the “Contouring the Nose” tutorial.  This is a 4-minute tutorial on how to slim your nose with one of the oldest practices in the make-up industry.  Contouring creates a sense of balance by adding definition. All that is needed is a shade of brown (cream, liquid or powder a shade or two darker than your complexion) and a highlighter (a lighter shade than your complexion).  Check out the video to view the technique on how to achieve this look.

So, I’ve told you my plan for the New Year, now I want to hear yours.  What is your Beauty Plan for 2011 and how can I help?

I swear, Kelly Rowland is absolutely gorgeous! Of course, she’s come a long way from the short burgundy hair days, but now, every time I see her, she never seems to disappoint. She always looks fabulously stunning.
I decided to do a tutorial on one of her recent looks.  I call it the “Girl Next Door” Look
