Morning Drink :: Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water & Ginger

I drink coffee almost everyday.  Recently, I decided to switch it up, and opt for a healthier morning drink, by drinking hot lemon water with ginger.  Sure, it’s not as tasty as a White Mocha, but, the benefits certainly outweigh any cup of Joe.

A natural cleanse,  lemon water with ginger works wonders for the skin. Check out the other benefits (via LiveStrong):

Water

Drinking enough water is important to keep you hydrated so that your organs and systems function properly. It is also important for your looks, as some of the signs of dehydration are sagging, drawn skin and brittle hair and nails. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is no one perfect formula for deciding how much water you need, but the basic “8 by 8″ rule—8 ounces of water, eight times a day—is a good rule of thumb.

Lemons

Lemon juice contains high levels of potassium and vitamin C. A strong antioxidant, lemon juice is also a mild diuretic, so adding lemons to your drinking water can help support your liver and kidneys in their natural job of flushing out toxins.

Ginger

Fresh ginger contains something called gingerol, which possesses anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and aids in healthy cellular activity in the gastrointestinal tract.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/2 inch knob of ginger sliced thinly or grated
  • lemon
  • cup of hot water

Simply pour boiling water over the ginger, let steep for about 5mins then add lemon juice.

I’ve been doing it for 6 days so far.

Even if you can’t see yourself giving up coffee for a few days, you can still implement drinking lemon water in your morning routine, before the coffee. Are you up for the challenge?

Women Look Their Oldest at 3:30PM on Wednesday

According to a recent study conducted by the tanning company, St. Tropez, two-thirds, of women experience an energy slump and look their oldest on Wednesday afternoons.  Pretty weird huh, especially coming from a tanning company? Apparently, partying throughout the weekend and sleepless nights, tend to catch up with us by Wednesday.  Nichola Joss, St. Tropez skin expert says, “It’s fascinating that 3.30pm on a Wednesday is the time women look their oldest. Combine the highest stress levels of the week on a Wednesday with the natural mid-afternoon slump and it seems that’s why women can look older than their years.” Joss said that alcohol may also play a part in a woman’s Wednesday appearance.   According to Joss, indulging in a few booze-filled nights on the weekend can effect your skin mid-week.

Joss says, “For maximum anti-ageing benefits it’s essential women get 7 to 8 hours sleep a night. Too little and your skin cells can’t rejuvenate, too much can result in puffy, older looking skin. A lack of sleep on a Monday does not bode well for how the skin will look on Wednesday.”

On a brighter note, Joss adds, “On Thursday, though, weekend anticipation boosts moods. That’s when women report they are most likely to have sex, which may be why on Friday, 60 percent say they’re at their happiest and most glowing.”

So what do you think about the St. Tropez survey?  Do you look and feel most tired by Wednesday afternoon?  Do you feel your happiest by Friday? Or do you feel that the survey is simply foolish?

The Drinking Mirror :: New app that shows you how drinking ages you

“I like to have a martini,Two at the very most. After three I’m under the table, after four I’m under my host.” – Dorothy Parker

I never appreciated Happy Hour until my mid-twenties.  By that time, I was sort of over the clubbing phase–honestly I no longer had the bounce back of coming home late, sleeping for 1-3 hours and surviving a full 8-9 hours of work.  So as a result, I became a huge fan of, after work socializing, unwinding and drinking with friends and colleagues.  This way, I was still able to have a good time and not feel drained the next day.  I go to Happy Hour at least once a week; the bartenders at my fave spot know my drink before I even open my mouth…usually an Apple Martini or Dark and Stormy and my limit, two drinks.

This morning as I was watching The Today Show, they did a segment on the ‘Drinking Mirror‘ app.  The Drinking Mirror app allows you to see how drinking, whether socially or binge, ages you.  Pretty creepy huh?   You simply upload a recent pic of yourself, answer the question about your weekly alcohol consumption, and the app will show you, how you will look in 10 years.  Pretty creepy huh?  I’ve never really thought about the long term effects that one or two drinks a week, could have on the body.  Things that make you go hmmmmm

So…I tried it myself, and here’s what I got

I didn’t notice much of a difference…

Try it and tell me what you think.  Here’s the web version

Morning Makeovers :: What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast

I saw a great segment on The Today Show this morning, about making the most of your mornings.  I’m a firm believer in how you start your morning, will usually set the tone for the rest of the day.  They featured, Laura Vanderkam, author of  “What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast”.  During the segment, Vanderkam said the most successful people get a lot  done while the rest of the world is still sleeping.   I think Young Jeezy said it first, “Run these streets all day, I can sleep when I die”.

Whether it’s a morning workout or jump-start on your workday, studies show tasks that require self-discipline are simply easier to do while the day is young.  Vanderkam believes these early zen-like mornings the secret to her success.   She organizes e-mails, prioritizes her thoughts and the day.  Vanderkam suggests to gradually start building the habit of waking up earlier, by starting your day 15 minutes earlier.

So remember, Monday morning  when your alarm goes off at 5:30am, instead of hitting the snooze button, get up! Give your mornings a makeover, by waking up early to fix yourself breakfast, plan your day, work-out, check e-mails, do your make-up, meditate, or whatever else, you never have time to do in the morning.  You’ll feel better and do better!

I’m not going to lie, I’m a snoozer, so I definitely plan to give this a start.

Juice it Up! :: Kale Smoothie for Radiant Skin

I have been trying to get into the juicing craze for some time now, but the procrastinator in me has kept me on the fence.  Last week, I read a interesting article on Refinery29.com, titled “5 Reasons Why Kale Is The Ultimate Look-Gorgeous, Feel-Amazing Food”, which went over the benefits of eating kale:

No, I’m not trying to lose weight, but who wouldn’t want more energy or radiant skin???  Besides, I am trying to strive for much healthier eating habits and this would be MUCH cheaper than those expensive anti-aging creams.

The article also had a recipe for making a kale smoothie…sound yucky I know.  Ironically, yesterday, a friend on Instagram posted a pic of her new juicer and that finally inspired me to run over to Whole Foods and give it a try.

Ingredients
4 oz. water
4 oz. unsweetened almond milk
1⁄2 frozen banana, cut into chunks
1 cup kale
1 tbs. coconut oil
1 tbs. shredded unsweetened coconut
2 to 4 ice cubes

I added my own twist to the smoothie, inside of the unsweetened coconut, I used frozen mango.  It was delicious and I’m hoping I can keep up with a glass, a day.

What about you?  Have you tried juicing?  What’s your favorite recipe? Still on the fence?

Yesterday, I had the opportunity of receiving an amazing massage from Lilly at The Jefferson Spa. I selected the “Couture Massage” in which I had the option of selecting the duration, pressure, strokes/techniques, areas of focus and oils.  I chose a 60 minute, medium pressure, Swedish and deep tissue that focused on my neck, hips and glutes.  Let me tell you, it felt heavenly! I was really ready to doze off, that’s how great it felt.  After my massage, I was treated to a pleasant snack of Greek yogurt and berries.

The atmosphere, the aura  and not to mention, my masseuse, Lilly and the rest of the staff at The Jefferson were superb.

Face Going HAM :: My Dermo Visit Recap

Over a month ago,  I explained how I scheduled an appointment with a dermatologist because my acne was getting out of control (Connect the Dots).  I booked an appointment with Dr. Agnes Chang from the Integrated Dermatology of K Street.  I had to wait a whole month until I could get in to see Dr. Chang, but according to her ratings on ZocDoc.com, evidently, she was worth the wait.

Based on my experience with most doctors, I expected that Dr. Chang would simply ask me what was wrong and she’d just prescribe me medication and tell me to be on my way.  She exceeded my expectations.  When she walked in,  she was glammed out — forget the lab coat, she rocked a faux fur trimmed sweater, hair shiny and wavy, makeup neutral yet radiant and a fresh gray polished manicure.

She was very attentive, engaging and proactive.  She asked about my skincare concerns and questions about products I have been using, allergies, etc.  She then examined my face and told me, “Melissa, we’re going to get your skin cleared up!”.  That’s all I needed to hear to feel optimistic.

She prescribed me with antibiotics that I must take once a day and Atralin, a gel that I apply to the problem areas at bedtime each night.  She informed me that changes won’t happen over night, that it may take some time, but with consistency, it will clear up.

I have a follow up appointment with Dr. Chang at the end of the month.  I have to bring the products that I have been using to this visit.  Along with the meds, I’ve decided to cut back on the sweets and drink more water.  Hopefully things should improve by next visit..  Either way I’ll keep you guys posted.

Winterize Your Skin Routine

Have you noticed that your skin seems to be drier than it was just two months ago? Well, that means it’s time for you to switch up your skincare regime and winterize your skin.  As the season changes, so does the temperature and humidity and just as we change our clothes to adjust to a specific season, the same goes for our skincare routine.  The colder and more winder it is, the more moisture our skin needs.

Here are some fabulous tips from Dr. Oz on winterizing your skin:

  1. Watch the Cleanser. Make sure you use something that nourishes while it cleanses.
  2. Wear SPF! Either wear sunscreen or makup with added SPF.
  3. Feed your skin; it needs antioxidants and Omega-3 fats! Blueberries and walnuts are excellent sources, respectively.
  4. Remember your ABC’s. Take vitamins A, B and C. Vitamin A keeps your skin strong and allows it to create new layers. Vitamin B is an important metabolism enhancer and vitamin C  rebuilds the collagen at your skin’s base.
  5. Shorten your shower and use luke-warm water.
  6. Moisturize!
One important tip, that he left out is to EXFOLIATE!!! You should exfoliate at least 1 or twice a week to remove the dead skin off the surface in order for the products to actually work.

I’ve not only had to switch up my skincare regime to winterize my skin, but also to address my adult acne issues.  Here’s what I’m using in my current routine:

CLEANSE – Bliss No ‘Zit’ Sherlock Purifying Cleanser + Toner
SERUM – Bliss No ‘Zit’ Sherlock Correcting Serum
MOISTURIZE – Bliss No “Zit’ Sherlock Oil Control Moisturizer & Laura Mercier’s Tinted Moisturizer (for extra moisture)
EXFOLIATE – Fresh Soy Face Exfoliant

I just started using Bliss No ‘Zit’ Sherlock products, so I’m still testing them out, but I will say, so far so good. I have also cut bad on fatty and sugary foods and have been working on drinking more water.

How have you winterized your skincare routine?  What products have you axed and what products are you currently using?

5 Ways to Upgrade Your Morning Routine

“To simply wake up every morning a better person than when I went to bed.” – Sidney Poitier

I’m not a morning person and it’s kind of sad, because I remember the days when I used to wake up at 5am with ease. Now, it’s a struggle to make it out of bed by 7am.  I chalk it up to old age, I guess lol, but I know ultimately, the way I start my mornings, usually determines what kind of day I’ll have.  So when I’m dragging at the beginning of the day, I usually have no time for breakfast, morning chitchats, etc. I’m always late, which consequently gives me less time to get things accomplished. So I’ve decided to alter my morning routine.

If your morning routine is also feeling like a “mourning” routine here are a few tips to help you begin your day on a more positive note.

1.  You Snooze You Lose
I have a terrible habit of setting my alarm to 5:30am, but not actually getting up until an hour later.  The more I snooze, the more I lose time from important things like eating breakfast, watching the news and actually being on time.  I have recently decided to break this bad habit, by getting up when my alarm goes off the first time.  I know this maybe difficult initially, but after sometime you’ll get used to it and if this is still not working, try putting your alarm away from you bed, so you actually have to get out of bed to turn it off.

2.  Give Thanks
When I think of this, I always think about my 8 month old nephew who passed away in his sleep last year and that more than ever inspires me to give thanks each morning. You don’t have to be religious or deeply spiritual.  Just take a few minutes out of your morning, before you check your e-mails, before you turn on the TV, to meditate, pray or just to reflect on what you’re grateful of.  This will definitely have a positive impact on the rest of your day.

3.  Work it Out
Remember, your body hasn’t been active in the 8,7,6 or how many hours you have slept, so a great way to give your mind and body a boost is running or jogging or even something as simple as stretching in the morning.

4.  Breakfast
They always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and studies have shown that people who eat breakfast, not only perform better throughout the day, but are more able to maintain a healthy weight.

5. Get Beautiful
Whether it’s taking the time to put on your makeup, styling your hair or painting your nails, do something that makes you feel beautiful.  By doing this, it will not only make you look fabulous, but feel it as well!

Let us know about your morning routine.  Is what you’re doing in the morning working for you? How can you improve it?
