Make It Lash :: My Mink Lash Experience

Its no secret that I LOVE lashes!  I have pretty much, every mascara you can think of from curling to volumizing.  Every false lash you can think of from natural and glamorous to full and individuals.  I have it all!  But sadly, all because I wasnt blessed with the long lashes gene.  Boohoo!  One time, I even decided to get my lashes done at a local nail salon, only to come out looking worse, than when I came in with no lashes at all.  It wasnt until I saw a family member, rocking her lovely but natural looking mink lashes, that I thought I would give it another try.

After receiving the information from my family, I set up my appointment with Qui from Make It Lash.  I decided the look I wanted, which was a natural, flare lash and the process took about two hours.  I know that seems like a hell of a long time, but keep in mind that each single lash was applied individually and honestly seeing the end results, it was worth the time.  The lashes were light-weight and looked natural, but noticeable and even more, I didnt have to apply mascara or use strips for 3 weeks.

So if youre thinking about getting mink lashes, I say, go for it!  Keep in mind though, that youll have to take proper care of the lashes to ensure they last between 3-5 weeks and youll have to keep up with your appointments.  You can try to stretch it,  but dont want to have one eye looking half full, while the other only has 3 lashes.  Trust you, people will notice the difference.

Have you tried mink lashes or thinking about it?

DIY Steam Treatment

I love the way my hair looks and feels after a steam treatment, but, Ive been hesitant on purchasing a streamer for home treatments.  I decided to find a more inexpensive route

Heres how you can do a Steam Treatment without a streamer:

  1.  Massage your conditioner through.  I have been using Its A 10 Miracle Hair Mask
  2. Place a plastic cap over your hair.  If you dont have a plastic cap, use a plastic bag.
  3. Dampen a hand towel microwave for about 30 seconds.
  4. Wrap the towel around your head and cover
another plastic cap or plastic bag
  5.  You can either wrap a towel around your head or use a heat cap for about 30 minutes.

Have you tried this method?  If not, are you willing to try?

Totally Rad 80s Skate Party

This past weekend, my sister, my close friend and I, all celebrated our 30-something birthday 80s style at the local roller skating rink.  Even though Im not that great of a skater, I had a great time jamming to 80s classics and checking out the 80s apparel everyone was rocking.  And guess what?  I did not fall, not once!

Bright colors, spandex and gold bamboo earrings and dookie chains were popular in the 80s, but, finding an outfit wasnt as easy as I had expected. I wanted to wear something bold, bright and daring.

Mommy Makeover :: From Frumpy to Fabulous

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of doing Steph, a stay-at-home moms makeup.   While Steph is a natural beauty, as a wife and mother of three, she rarely has the opportunity to try a more glamorous look.   So we spent a Sunday afternoon glamming her up a bit.

Heres a brief rundown on what we did:

We used Black Opals True Color Stick Foundation.  The foundation gave her an amazing coverage, but not too heavy still able to see her beautiful freckles. We added false lashes, that were natural looking to help beautifully frame her eyes.  Finally we gave her a fun, yet pink lip to compliment her complexion.

As I said before, shes a natural beauty, so she really didnt need much, and her chic haircut,  definitely added to the makeover.

Here are a few makeup tips for busy moms who want to update their look:

1.  No time for foundation?  Try a tinted moisturizer.  This will save you the time it takes to put on both a moisturizer and foundation. Plus give you an added bonus of sun protection, a natural look and its perfect for summer when you dont want to wear anything heavy.

2.  When you dont want to fuss about blush or even foundation, Bronzer is your BFF.  Simply adding alight  touch of bronzer to your to the top of the forehead, cheekbones, and along your jawline will add a hint of a healthy glow.

3.  When youve been up all night with the baby or completing youre childs science project, a great concealer can come in handy.  Use a concealer with a brush on applicator, like Cliniques Airbrush Concealer.  It provides a smooth and flawless coverage, but also very easy and convenient to use.

4. If you going to do anything at all, mascara is a must!  I meet a lot of women who dont have the time for makeup application, but, if theres anything that they do, its apply mascara.

5.  Dont like lipstick? Dont have to time to reapply?  Use a lip chubby instead, like Revlons Balm Stain.  Why?  You get the benefit of a lip liner and a lip balm all in one.  They go on smooth, last for hours and come in a variety of vibrant colors.

Summer Proof Easy Hair : Pin Curls

A while back I did a post on one of my favorite, humidity proof hairstyles pin curls!  In my original post, I used Mizanis Thermasmooth Guard Serum, along with a curling iron.  Im still a big fan of the curls, as I especially LOVE the convenience and extra time I have with the no-fuss do, but since Im always trying new products, Ive switched it up a bit.

Instead of Mizanis Thermasmoth Guard Serum, I have been using Biosilks Silk Therapy Serum.  The Biosilk serum is more costly, but much lighter than the Mizani serum.  I also replaced the curling iron with a flat iron.  In my experience, using the flat iron is much faster with less effort.  At night, I pin the curls and wrap my hair and in the morning, I simply take the pins out and go.

This look will last you days, even weeks, with no additional products needed or tools needed.  You know Im all about simplicity!

DIY Pomegranate, Brown Sugar Honey Scrub

Last Fall, I did a post on the DIY Brown Sugar and Olive Oil Scrub.  At the time, I thought that recipe was the best thing going, until months later, I started to experiment with other products in my kitchen.

Pomegranate Facial Scrub

Knowing that pomegranate aids in cell regeneration, anti-aging, and sun protection, I decided to add pomegranate juice to the recipe.  In replace of olive oil, I decided to add honey.  Honey is a natural antibacterial, so it helps with the occasional breakouts, it helps keep the skin moisturized, and just like pomegranate, it full of antioxidants, which helps slow down aging.

Heres What I Did:

  • 2 teaspoons of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1 teaspoon of pomegranate juice *Add more brown sugar to thicken if needed
  • Gently massage the scrub onto my face
  • Rinsed it off with warm water

I like this recipe much better than the brown sugar and olive oil recipe.  My skin still feels just as soft as the previous recipe, but, it also feels moisturized, which helps create a glow.

My Halloween Costume:: DIY Centaur

If you been following the blog for sometime you know how I love to create my own costume.  One of my favorite Halloween creations was my Poison Ivy costume, over 3 years ago.

This year, I wanted to make something a little more difficult, a centaur.  Centaur which represent the zodiac sign, Sagittarius, the Archer,  is a mythological half-man, half-horse.  Sagittarius is  said to represent an inner spirit to free ones self from mankinds animalistic nature, and enhance the purpose of the soul.

This was a very difficult, yet fun task.  Everything, with the exception of the wig and jewelry, were either made from scratch or altered.   The form of the horse was first made out of chicken wire, then covered with paper mache (my least fave part), added foam and stuffing for dimension, metal pieces and duck tape for stability and covered with faux fur.  We added wheels to make it mobile. My pants were sown out of the same fur.   The corset was actually white, I tried to dye it brown but it didnt turn out right, so we covered it with faux leather. I purchased the bow and arrow and quiver as a kit and sprayed parts of it gold.  The skirt was made of brown faux leather  with a gold netted material sown on top. I ran into a lot roadblocks with keeping donk stable, (also, cut myself with the wire, burn fingers with the glue gun and even stepped on a needle), but after a couple of tweaks we got her rolling and sitting up perfectly.

Humidity-Proof Hairstyle :: Pin Curls

I love to wear my hair straight, but with the summers heat and humidity, thats nearly impossible.   Trust, Ive tried a ton of  products, but, I have yet to come across a product that is completely frizz proof.  So, as a result, Ive had to take matters into my own hands, by figuring out an humidity-proof hairstyle.  I decided to roll with pin curls,  because even when its humid out, the curls will still hold, even if if they drop  just a little.

Heres what I used:

  • Curling Iron (the smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl) or you could even use your flat iron
  • Mizanis Thermasmooth Smooth Guard Serum
  • Hair Pins

I dont use hairspray, but if you maximum hold, you can add that as well.  Also, remember, the smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl.  I prefer more loose waves/big curls, so I use a larger barrel.

At night I just pin it, and wrap it up with a scarf.  In the morning, I take out the pins, use my fingers to comb through it and go.

Review :: Croc 2 Infrared Flat Irons

I was looking for new flat irons and came across Croc Infrared Flat Irons.  I immediately looked them up on Folicia to check out the reviews.  Folicia actually had the Croc 2 Infrared Flat Irons listed on their Top Picks for thick, coarse and/or curly hair below the shoulder and it had great reviews from consumers.

Heres the run down:

The Croc 2 Infra-red 1Inch Flat Iron is internationally patented to combine ceramic, tourmaline, titanium and infrared technology. It reconditions and reconstructs your hair while maintaining health and providing powerful styling. Faster heat penetration makes styling quicker which keeps your hair healthier.  With a 450F maximum heat setting, this iron is perfect for giving or maintaining keratin treatments. But remember, if you are turning up the temp, make sure to use a heat protectant!

Infrared Benefits:

Balances moisture

Prevents hair damage and dandruff

Stimulates hair growth

Protects color treated hair

Removes bacteria and odor

Keeps hair healthy by sealing moisture and adding silky shine

Infra-red heat is highly efficient, fast acting, non-toxic and non-allergic

Fastest heat-up and recovery processes

Perfect for keratin treated hair

Seals in moisture, adds silkiness and shine, and maintains style all day60% faster and more effective straightening or styling than the average flat iron

Industrys first environmentally friendly Green Digital DisplayAutomatic shut-off

I just colored my hair, so maintaining its moisture, along with taming my thick hair, were SUPER important to me.  At a costly $160, I was a little worried that they might not work as good as my Amikas, but luckily, I have a 30% off coupon and ULTA has a great return policy, so I purchased it.

The first time I used it, I didnt use the infrared feature (I actually didnt know how to turn that feature on).  I went up to 420 to test them out.  My hair felt very silky and didnt have that burnt hair smell, which was a plus.  I used them again on my mom, who has fine hair.  I actually figured out how to use the infrared feature with her (push the power button twice).  I noticed a difference when I used the infrared on a strand of her hair, it felt more soft and silky.  Usually, she would get on me about spending $160 on some flat irons, but she was pretty satisfied with the product and results.

So heres what I think:

Love the digital temperature control

Love that it heats up super fast

Love that automatic cut off

Love that my hair gets straight with a single pass

Love that I didnt have deal with the burnt hair smell

Heres what I recommend:

Get a warranty! Majority of the negative comments came from a defect on the iron after constant use over a couple of months/years.

Use a heat protectate product.

If your hair is color treated, relaxed and/or not in good condition, dont crank up the heat.
